I dunno. I think both of em had a bit of a persecution complex. Warnock especially liked to harp on about how he was achieving success on a shoestring budget. The fact that there was no big money investment and the pressure that goes with it probably ensured they got longer in the job. But when you watch the vids back now and take the SUFC spectacles off. We really were that agricultural long ball team that everyone remembers us by.

The Premier League money now has exploded so much it’s unfair and impossible to compare.

The board never trusted Warnock with money, which was proved when they gave Robson a bigger budget in the Championship than they gave Warnock in the Premier League, if they wanted to be that harsh they should have replaced Warnock after promotion,.

When you say 'past or present', specifically 'past', do you mean the players Warnock and Bassett would have bought in their own particular era, with today's budget or do you mean players Warnock and Bassett would buy now?

If the former, is the circa £45m pro-rated down to the equivalent purchasing power in their day, taking into account inflation, or can they spend our £45m at the rate it was then, which would give them the equivalent of circa £106m for Bassett and just under £62m for Warnock.

If the latter, and they buy past players, are those players at the age they would be now or are they able to be bought at any time during their career - eg a 22 year old Diego Maradona from 1982 or a 58 year old, fat smack head from the present day?

Or is this all just a call to arms to the usual suspects, to come on and have another cheap pop at Warnock?

Warnock thought that David Nugent was a fantastic striker and was reportedly willing to offer 6 million for him , a huge amount at the time . He wasn't , and never has been .

Meanwhile , he was happy to sell a certain William Louis Sharp for 100 grand . An old bloke who I used to chat to in the pub before the match who went to all the reserve matches , told me that Billy ( who I'd never heard of at the time ) was going to be something special and was a natural born goal scorer .
