I find it interesting when people say we are Sh*t on a regular basis which I believe performances and league position completely justifies it, but I wonder what other teams and managers would think if our players were available on a free agent individually. Obviously wages and club finances dictate where a player goes but I wonder where abouts our squad from Saturday would end up if released today. I have wrote a league and the potential kind of club they would go to...but what do we think?

  • 25 Long Lower League 1/Upper League 2 1st Team or Championship team as a youth prospect seeing very little 1st team action (Shrewsbury Town)
  • 5 Brayford Lower Championship (Burton Albion next year(taking a wage cut to further career) or Fulham/MK Dons)
  • 34 Edgar MLS (Vancouver White socks Bench warmer)
  • 15 Collins The ex-footballer abyss (Harrogate town or similar)
  • 19 McEveley League 1 (Scunthorpe)
  • 8 Coutts League 1 (Swindown)
  • 6 Basham League 1 (Bury)
  • 33 Cuvelier League 1 (Rochdale)
  • 29 Adams League 1 or Championship Prospect (Huddersfield town development squad)
  • 14 Done upper League 1 (Walsall)
  • 10 Sharp upper League 1 lower championship (Charlton)
Substitutes
  • 1 Howard League 1 (2nd keeper) (Bury)
  • 7 Flynn League 1 (Rochdale)
  • 18 Sammon League 2 (Carlisle)
  • 21 Baptiste League 1 (pay per play rebuild fitness Port Vale)
  • 22 Reed League 1 (Barnsley sub for development)
  • 27 Calvert-Lewin League 2 top 6... (Bristol Rovers)
  • 36 Whiteman League 2 (unproven so Luton kind of team)
A team aspiring for promotion to the Championship should have players that would look comfortable in the league above so you don't have to buy a whole new squad... I think we have a mid table league 1 squad with a couple of players with the experience to play in the league above but all in all a team that can happily survive in League 1 without pushing for promotion...Thoughts?

Individually I'm sure all of them could do a reasonable job in an half decent side. But collectively under Adkin's "madcap" tactics and "lucky dip" team selections they are absolutely awful to a man. There's gonna come a point when Billys throws the towel in too and goes through the motions like the rest of em.

I think you've got it spot on.

UTB

Sammon - League Two very swiftly followed by the Conference and even lower.

So from that assessment (which aint far wrong) we are 'at our level'.

To achieve promotion, you have to have a net gain in overall team talent.

We have sold that 'delta'.

McCabe out.

I disagree

Thank you for your opinion.

Do you think those players would be at better or worse clubs? Do you believe we are heading towards relegation, are are you not willing to build upon that answer?

I was always told at school to explain my answer...even if its wrong you can still get marks for it :)

You asked for thoughts, i disagree, but don't have the time to go through in detail. I thought rather than you having a lonely thread, i'd contribute first to kickstart the opinions ;)

I don't think you are far off at all. None of the players would be star attractions at their clubs either . There isn't one player besides Sharp, Che and maybe Brayford if he remembers how to play football that I would have any fear about coming back to haunt us. I can't imagine any of them will ever get higher than the level they are at now. I certainly don't think we will be saying "Cant believe how bad Coutts/McEverley/Collins/Sammon/Flynn/Woolford etc were for us last season and how well they are doing now". That's not to say we won't replace them with even worse next season and think "Well at least they were average League 1 players and not League 2 ones"

How about this team of this season's cast-offs, who were, or are, all looking for clubs:

Howard.

Freeman, Alcock, McGahey, Harris

Davies, Baxter, Doyle, Khan

Scougall
,McNulty.

Subs: Higdon,

Not that much worse off are they?.

Don't wish to detract from the thread but are they that much worse as a team and as individuals?

Other than getting Vancouver's name wrong (and as an Ontario native Edgar would be more likely to head to Toronto), I think that's a fair assessment.

That said, some clubs have a tendency of surprisingly signing players that look like they should be at a level below. Players like Doyle & Davies, both said to be on biggish wages, went straight to League 2 – whereas Khan, Dimaio, Porter, Miller, Whitehoise, all got League 1 offers. Febian Brandy was remarkably picked up by a Championship club.

But Brandy was picked up by Rotherham and soon binned off after.

A couple of years ago and I was on holiday in Cuba, and there was a young lad there with his girlfriend, he was thick as shit but knew a bit about football and had been a youth teamer at Walsall and he told me Brandy could be a top, top player but his attitude stank.

Don't even know where Brandy is at nowadays.

I think, botoble, you've got it, more or less, spot on.

I'd love to see the players' faces if they saw that, though, as it's obvious a few of them seem to think their talent and effort is wasted on us, so why bother? Championship clubs will surely be queueing to snap them up in June, no worries ;)

Oh definitely, but I was more making a point of where players go next rather than where they ultimately end up. His demise was particularly rapid mind – can currently be found plying his trade in Thailand.

I'll shorten the post for you. Just say all either L2 or Conference, well..Woolford and Sammon, plus Collins, are more Sheffield fc than Conference to be fair.

As much as I would love to say the above on the basis they are making an embarrassment of our club I don't think the above is fair. We are mid table League 1 so I think the majority of players are probably League 1 players but without sharps goals we would be closer to the relegation zone! However I think its fair to say that not having a consistent starting 11 nor any idea what tactics we should play, it is dragging the level of these "hard working honest professionals" down in our "fantastic arena".

If most of our players were league 2 standard or below, we would be in the bottom 4 or 5 teams in this league....I would have thought...However I think we have a lot of average league 1 players that if organised and motivated could potentially break into play offs, unfortunately it would appear they are neither and mid table will be where we finish without something drastic changing.

Keep saying ... you can 'organise' and 'motivate' all you want. They will still have the same playing ability.

When you buy a Ford Fiesta 1.1 base model, no stereo, good runner. T&T, never been raced rallied or rolled, vgc, bargain £200 take it off me hands mate I'm dead next week etc ... it is still a fucking Ford Fiesta. It will still do 80mph downhill in a tailwind with your foot hard down and your gurning face up against the steering wheel. You'll still feel it as a Ford Fiesta over every bump and it will rattle like a bastard and rust on your drive within five weeks. It will still fail to start and give you a whacking MoT bill every fucking year (Cuvellier, I'm looking at you)

If you have sold your Mercedes SLK and spunked the majority on a new lawn and the residual on the Fiesta, and your life and expensive job is dependent on commmuting in that Fiesta, have a guess what Sir Alan would say about you as a businessman.

Think it might be a bit harsh on a few that, I'll go for a more realistic effort. I'm not saying that our squad is any good btw, cos they're wank! Just a few are a bit better than they've been depicted.

  • 25 Long Upper League 1 first teamer or Championship bench warmer (MK Dons/Rotherham/Bradford)
  • 5 Brayford Lower Championship (Fulham/Blackburn)
  • 34 Edgar MLS (Toronto FC)
  • 15 Collins League 2 (Cambridge or the like)
  • 19 McEveley League 1 (Scunthorpe)
  • 8 Coutts League 1 (Swindon)
  • 6 Basham Higher League 1 (Wigan/Millwall)
  • 33 Cuvelier League 1 (Rochdale)
  • 29 Adams Championship Prospect (MK Dons/Brentford)
  • 14 Done Upper to Mid League 1 (Walsall/Bradford/Rochdale)
  • 10 Sharp Upper League 1 to Mid Championship (Wigan/Blackburn/Bristol City)
Substitutes
  • 1 Howard League 1 (2nd keeper) (Bury)
  • 7 Flynn Scottish Prem (Dundee)
  • 18 Sammon Lower League 2 (York)
  • 21 Baptiste Championship (he's already at Boro)
  • 22 Reed Championship (Prospect for the likes of Brentford/Cardiff)
  • 27 Calvert-Lewin League 2 top 1 (Northampton)
  • 36 Whiteman League 2 (unproven so Luton kind of team)
Even with my realistic alterations we are far from being anything like promotion candidates.
We've made a huge cock up of having a bit of money. What we've spent could've got several teams promoted 10x over. But when the people putting the money up know naff all about football it makes things a bit more difficult.

Except Pommpey.........We are in a Ford Fiesta league, the SLK's are in the Championship with Ferraris in the Premiere League.

We just need our Ford Fiestas to be fully serviced, with the correct fuel, the chief mechanic knowing how to get the last horsepower out of them, the drivers pushing them to the limit in each race and we just might be able to make the top 6 on the grid (or finishing line)...........

Thanks for your analogy, I don't know if we are any further forward except agreeing we have got a lot of Ford Fiestas?

Austin Allegro anyone?

Ah, engineering. Glad you broached that. In a closed system energy in = energy out. A Ford Fiesta 1.1 has a pretty limited upper end with which to extract those extra ponies. We are left with Ford Fiestas and you need to be an XR2i to be able to get on the stating grid in this League.

We used to have RS2000s (I love old Fords, me) and a few XR4is and once upon a time, a Cosworth but that was written off after a reckless collision with a Skoda in a parking lot.
