Ian Bryson Interview

He started playing as I started watching. If Ryann Flynn eats a few more Shredded Wheat he could be the next Jock Bryson. :)

He was brilliant in that rise to the top and battle to stay there. Never spectacular but always full of effort and endeavor.

Two memories of Jock stick in my mind - first against Barnsley in the cup 5th round, Colin Hill hit the bar with an absolute pile-driver (it's probably still vibrating now) and Jock stuck in the rebound before running off to give the double-rods to the Barnsley fans behind the goal. The second was in a league cup game against Spurs in '90 - we hadn't won yet, it was just after Gazza's tears at Italia 90 and there was a surprisingly big-game atmosphere for the game. The ball came to Jock on the left inside our half and he hadn't got a pass on - Gazza came charging in to close him down, Jock gave him a shimmy and left him sliding around on his arse as he bombed off down the wing with the crowd roaring.

I remember Dane Whitehouse's testimonial, Bryson played for the allstars team and was probably the best player on the pitch. Other than Kozluk of course, who played up front and scored five.

Cheers Ian. Looking forward to the next parts. Jock was an excellent player for us and made a lot of chances for Deane and Agana
Terrific work rate and some crucial goals
Fond memories of him

Thanks

Cracking stuff again. Love these interviews, and the interviewees all seem articulate and willing to talk, which is refreshing.

And finally Part 3. A bit on the Blades, why he didn't stay long at Barnsley. captaining Preston to a title, playing with a young David Beckham and what he's up to now.

Glad to see you are enjoying it. I know Ian's wife Kirsty (who is on twitter (@Footykaybee) was sharing with him the great comments and memories of Blades fans on there.

I've spotted a couple of mistakes in Part 2 (memories playing tricks on the two Ian's) and I'll be correcting them later.

Thanks again for reading and your support. UTB!

I have a memory of him scoring a superb header where he was jumping backwards (try it and you'll be lucky to see your feet get up more than two inches) and nod it back across goal and into the far corner.

Is it a correct description, and when was it?

puppet?? (he'll know)
great series these.. bryson was one of the most criminally underrated players ever to wear the shirt.. without him deane and agana would have been nothing

I was chatting to some Preston fans outside the Lane after the play off semi the other year and one of the lasses said she didn't mind too much that it was us who they'd lost to as her Dad used to play for us. She seemed shocked that I knew who he was when she said 'Ian Bryson'.

He may have scored the first Blades goal I saw actually... 2-2 draw against Barnsley in the Cup in 1989/90 - did he get our first? I finally managed to see a Blades goal in my third game after two 0-0 draws. 10 year old me was hooked!

He got the second. Bradshaw got the first.

From memory, the game at Everton on 11/4/92.

He scored the rebound after a Colin Hill piledriver smacked the bar - remember it well :)

Love these interviews. The Deane, Agana, Bryson trio have so many great memories for me. I'd love to see a goals/assists stat for the first couple of seasons they played together. All three seemed chuffed to bits to be here. All three seem like nice, down to earth blokes who happened to be footballers and were happy that they were. I like that. A lot.

That's quality Max. I doubt Ian Bryson would feature in any Blades' select 11, but he played his part in the Bassett days, for sure. Did you ever see the "United" series?. Young mum Kirsty with (perhaps said!) babe in arms, waving off Jock as he left for a match.. You could have least got her autograph!!

My favourite Bryson goal was away at rocker park in a very tense 6 pointer , remember a long ball bouncing over Gary Bennett and Bryson picking it up and seemed to have forever before slotting it home calmly

Have to be honest I thought he'd miss

Yeah I remember it at the time (was only ten) but would love to watch it back sometime. Another marketing opportunity for the club maybe? Get it put on DVD?

Is that why you are a Blade BF?

Noooh. Actually Kilmarnock's ground is very like Hillsboro, same awful floodlights and of course blue and white stripes. Could never watch them. Have more of a soft spot for their rivals Ayr or as they pronounce it up here 'ear'.

Arrived in Scotland's answer to Barnsley in 2004 having 'relocated' back to Haggisland with a contract.

Quite weird really being an Englishman abroad. I quite like it really. The only place in the world where you can't get an English newspaper!

Originally emigrated from Fulwood to the Isle of Wight in 1964 hence the original Vectis Blade. My first forays involved getting up for the 0500 boat from Fishbourne then via London just for a home game!

Scotlands version of Sheffield United are Hibernian.

After a long, and expensive trip to Caledonia to see the Hibees stuffed 5-1 in the Scottish Cup Final i can safely say that they are just as jinxed as we are

Think you might be right there Brownie. At least we haven't lost to the Pigs in the FA Cup Final like that (oh the shame of it).

Commiserations.:(
