......I've got a romantic weekend away with Mrs SV in North Yorkshire the weekend of the playoff final. We'll be in Leyburn, and have planned a nice walk around the Aysgarth Falls, as seen in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves when Kevin Costner falls in the river. We will also be taking in the romantic delight of a trip just down the road to Masham, home of both the Theakston's and Black Sheep breweries, where I shall try and interest the wife in drinking bitter because it's nice and not because that's all we have left in the house after the wine has all gone and the malt whisky is safely hidden.

This trip was booked ages ago without any thought for the date of the final, and as the in-laws are paying for it as a Christmas present,looking after Small SV and providing spending money too I'm not going to finish it early just for United to disappoint me again.

I shall watch the final on the telly when we get back, safe in the knowledge that it won't be costing me over £150 in total like it did last year. I've been to the other four and spent quite a lot of money to see us be shit, every time. The one thing you can guarantee is United being rubbish in a playoff final.

That's why I'm not going if we make it, and it is a big if. So if you've said you won't be going in the past will you stay true to your word? And don't give me any of this "if you were a proper Blade you'd be going" bollocks, I've watched United all over, and this year a trip away with my wife is more important than a trip to watch United show they don't give a monkey's about winning a final.

If we do it, I shall raise a glass to them and grimly await August and the start of the season of the shafting because we are NGE.

I've already said that away matches are going to have to be a rarity rather than the norm next season, for us both. The lack of enjoyment plus rising costs of beer, petrol, food, hotels makes then expensive disappointments. Plus we've got a house to try and afford and decorate and nowt gets done because Sunday's are spent trying to get over Saturdays.

So we're shit. And I'd rather going on holiday in the sun skinted me instead of this bag of shite.

I agree with your feelings and share your thoughts going forward.

However, I will go to the home leg (watch away leg on TV) and if by some miracle they get to Wembley then I will troop down there but go as cheap as possible with National Express/cheap trains and just go for the day like last year having a few pints pre and post game and thats it.

I remember early and mid 2000's; me and missus would go to most away games like yourself. We of course had the triple assault season, promotion and a season in the Premiership. Dread to think how much we spend on away days, weekends away, travel, tickets etc. We gradually cut back and then had a little un; bought a house etc and she stopped going completely (may start again when he is older) and now other than 4 or 5 away games a year; the home games are enough!

I save a lot of money, heartache and get to spend time witht the family at weekends. I admire those that go to games like yesterday and spend probably excess of £100 every fortnight (by time tickets, travel and ale are factored in) but I cant afford it nor do I see why I should waste full days and a lot of money so regularly when most of the current set up and side dont give a toss.

I still enjoy going to the away games but pick them out tactically based on where grounds are (London, Manchester vicinity) spliced with a few new grounds. We have a goood laugh me and my mate and have a few beers and perversely enjoy going to some of these non descript places. Will be same for forseeable. Trouble is if as expected we dont go up; been to Port Vale, Rotherham, and many of those that may go down so already running out of grounds at this level. Once you have been to Bury, Crawley, Shrewsbury, Oldham, Tranmere, Orient, Brentford etc the novelty kind of wears off. Cant see us taking the numbers we have last few years to such places and some games it will nly be the hardcore couple of hundred away and down to around 14-15,000 at home I feel.

It's a dilemma! I'm due to go with the brother-in-law to watch London Broncos v Wigan Warriors the day before (18/05/13) the play-off final. Now, do I just go ahead with the RL game and forego the looking-slimmer-by-the-minute chance that we will be at Wembley; or do I wait and then force myself to endure another day of abject misery at yet another non-performance on the big stage (which would make 8 I've suffered) by the Blades?

As for play offs - Undecided on home & away semi legs but a deffo no no for Wembley. I vowed never again after the Burnley debacle and stuck (unexpectedly) to my guns for the even bigger Hudders debacle!
Once its been done for a first time the next should be easier....

For me it's more a case of not wanting to. If the family want to go there's a good chance of me getting my arm twisted but if I wasn't in that situation I honestly wouldn't fancy it. Had my heart broken by United too many times and couldn't give a flying anymore.

I also agree with Linz, we would get battered in the championship. We don't have the finance to make that team good enough for the next level. So on the other hand we're better off where we are anyway.

If the Blades are there, I'll be there with my lad. He still classes the Huddersfield game there as the best day of his life because he got to see his team play at Wembley Stadium and that is nothing short of fucking magical to an 8 year old who has been dragged to Stevenage, Wycombe, Exeter, Scunthorpe etc etc etc.

Somehow, despite everything they've chucked at us, I retain a tiny little fraction of his sense of wonder when we make it to the big stage. Yes, we should've been in a proper Cup Final by now but we haven't. What we have had is probably more than our share of trips to the famous stadium and I can't imagine ever missing one of them.

I'll take him down there, enjoy our day out together, take lots of photos, have that nagging sense that whatever happens we won't win (that same feeling that was there as strong as ever when Huddersfield needed snookers in the penalty shoot out), I'll feel sick for him if we lose and even worse for my Dad (assuming I can persuade him to give it one more go) but we'll have been there with our club.

im definitely (maybe) not going to either of the semis. i know one is last home game etc but ive really had enough of this season now. one last masochistic day for the preston game, then fook it. if we make the final i have no idea. i dont wanna go. i really dont. its not a day/weekend out, no idea how anybody can see it like that unless youre carshalton playing the fa cup final or summat daft. the smiley ppl annoy me. i feel like im waiting on deathrow from the moment i see to the stadium (wembley or anywhere else), til the final whistle. how anybody can enjoy going to a play off final or cup semi is beyond me. its less fun than getting waterboarded in guantanamo bay.
