Rabbi Howell our first and only Romany player. Part of the historic team that won our one and only Division 1 title in 1898.

Was a bit of a character always in disciplinary trouble but fell foul of the strict Methodist SUFC board in 1898 due to having an extra marital affair with the women who looked after the horses. She later became his wife. Accusations were made that he threw a game against Sunderland due to scoring two own goals. One of the accusers was Fatty Foulke the SUFC goalkeeper who many felt was trying to excuse his own failings in the game. Our greatest ever player Ernest Needham however was a champion of Howell and wrote in glowing terms about him in his autobiography.

Transferred to Liverpool Howell captained them to their first ever league title in 1901. Caps for England followed. Transferred again to PNE where he ended his career due to a broken leg. To their eternal shame the SUFC board refused to send a team to play in his testimonial and he struggled to make a living thereafter.
