One of my favourite players of his era. Would love for someone to verify if he was as good as I remember?
Seem to recall he was consistent, won his aerial duals and had a goal threat too.

Wonder how 'Smurph' is getting on?

Thought he was terrible initially then improved vastly under NW and became a mainstay? Wasn’t hugely tall but had a incredible leap.

In the Adrian Heath era, the only players I recall who looked decent were Marcello & Martin Smith.

As for Murphy, maybe he didn't shine initially because he was robbed of the opportunity to form a legendary CB pairing alongside....

Billy Hendry. One of the first professional players to sign for SUFC in 1891. Came from Preston with 2 others instigated by Charles Stokes Chairman of the Club committee and the man responsible for the creation of SUFC when he was Club Secretary. Not Charles Clegg the pigs Chairman who they would have you believe was the founder.

Hendry was Club captain from 1891-95 when he left. He captained the team that won our one and only play off to date in 1893 against Accrington, known as a Test match at the time, resulting in promotion to the top tier. We remained in Division 1 for the next 37 years.

Ernest Needham said Billy was a big influence to his career. Died aged 31

I'm remembering these names and I'm going to storm the thread you put up for the return fixture against West Brom in a few weeks time.

Why on earth was he number 7? Were we playing him right wing for a match?
