he was chairman of the pigs after Taylor, and at the same time became chairman of the FA. Funny how a pig always seems to be high up in the FA, been said over the years that FA money built the sty in time for the 66 World cup. Of course they were chosen as Sheffields venue for the 2018 World cup which we didn't get............... tee hee no free building work this time round on the sty.

Of course Euro 96 saw further improvements to the sty, then we have the local MP's pig protection league Chaired by Blunkett and his gay side kick Clive Betts, before them it was Joe Ashton and Roy brown Hatter Hattersley who liked spitting on people.................... these could always be counted on to get the pigs name noticed in the right places.

I think you're missing out on some balance to be honest.
Many moons ago (probably in the region of 10-12 years ago) I made a thread on a now defunct messageboard with exactly the same title as this - it was after a session and was mildly embarrassing (as I am occasionally reminded of). It was in the middle of typical late 90s/early 00s nondescript season in the Championship, and a world away from the emotions of the last couple of weeks, but the reason behind the posting was that no matter the events, United will always be there and despite ups and downs there will be my team in red and white stripes to support.
United play a large part in my life, I have a season ticket and I commit a lot of emotion and effort to my support. I am proud to be a Blade, I cannot resist when I'm in the car and I see a United car sticker on the road chanting out loud "Na na na na..." (and an opposite type of response to a pig badge).
I love going into a pub full of Blades and sensing the joint will for this team of ours to win. I take huge enjoyment from nights like Huddersfield away when it all comes together with a win and a big away support and just buzzing coming away from a ground.
I was devastated on Saturday, I won't try and hide it or pretend otherwise. I hate that the pigs are benefiting at our expense, I don't want to play in this division and I want United to be a force in football in this country at least aiming for something like Stoke have done recently. I am like you fed-up of being let down by United when it counts. A mate of mine down south who I've known since the mid-90s and has followed with amusement the regular kicks in the teeth I have received as a United fan and consistently asks me why I bother and tells me to give it up.
All that said, it's only football, even if saying that goes against the grain of a lot of fans. Yes, I place a lot of importance on it, spend a lot of cash and a lot of my time on it and give a lot of emotion to it, but in the cold light of day 3 days later, whilst there is the huge disappointment still nagging at me, I do realise that in the scheme of things it's not life or death. Maybe in my teens and early - mid 20s I would have agreed with you, but now I personally feel like I can see some perspective about my support and how it fits into my life.
So I think you should man up (harsh I know - I don't mean to be critical) realise that football is simply not the be-all and end-all of life, but get on with supporting the football club you have stuck by for many years who provide a community, a reliable and entertaining place to go on every other Saturday and the thought that one day, it will work out for us. And it may yet be this season, be it by a miracle on Saturday or (probably another miracle given our history) in the play-offs. If it's not, they'll still be there next season and we'll still have good and bad days supporting them.

The title wasn't exactly the same as this, what you actually said was "I love The Blades, I really do" That was it, all of it and it was posted in the early hours.
I may inadvertently have been repsonsible for contributing to the embarrassment, but I said it was the best post I'd ever seen, it said everything that needed to be said with emotion, pathos, sincerity, affection. I still think it's the best post ever, as you can tell, I remember the text more accurately than you do.
I agree with your above post, perspective is very important and all we have to do is remember that The Blades will always let us down and accept that, we can have some wonderful times along the way, knowing there is misery to follow
Very good post and exactly how I feel.
We don't support United because they win things. We do it because we feel them as an extension of our identity, our community, our background or whatever. Whetever division they are in, we will still feel that.

Still one of my favourite posts of all time! A succinct appraisal of our beloved club made while in a state of extreme refreshment! Nowt better than wildly pissed enthusiasm.
They'll fuck it up more often than not, will frustrate, irritate and as last Saturday leave you utterly depressed. But we'll keep coming back for more, they are still ours. And just like that lottery syndicate you've been in for years which never fucking wins and on which you suspect the bloke collecting has been trousering the cash since '96, you have to keep paying. Because next time, they might actually win.
Probably won't mind, so take plenty of beer tokens...

Take the easy option, support Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City etc. I work with someone who supports Chelsea - the closest affiliation he has to Lahndahn is watching Eastenders on telly.
Most Blades supporters I know have a real connection to the club. My Grandad was the first in our family and despite living in Walkley supported the Blades including wagging school to see the team bring home the FA Cup in 1925. His dream was to see them do it again but sadly this was unfulfilled when he died in 1990. My Mum and Uncle caught the Blades bug from him and myself and my brother followed suit, (I'm now trying to get my daughters interested) - supporting anyone else was not an option and I'm glad. Because despite the pain they put us through, the underachieving, the nearlys, maybes and what ifs - it's my club and whenever anyone asks I'm proud to say I support Sheffield United.
It's part of who I am and where I'm from. Having moved away from Sheffield it's a connection that cannot be broken. And you never know one day, one day.........

Depends how old you are I think. Having supported the blades way back in the Doc pace, kettlborough era, you just wonder if your going to be around when they actually achieve something worthy. But if you are in your younger years, school kid/ or 40's you may still have time on your side. Don't want to sound morbid, but some of us can't hang around much longer. But that won't stop me following my red&white wizards no matter what. UTB and f@ck the pigs.

For me, following the Blades is a family thing - passed down from generation to generation. I started going in the late 70s, going to the match with my Dad & Grandad (both no longer with us) & my brother. Me & my brother started in the kop pen - and I still remember watching as some opposition fans tried "to take the kop" but invariably speaking just got a good kicking before fleeing onto the pitch to be escorted to the away end. In my mid to late teens I started going with friends - home and away - to such footballing giants as Southend, Grimsby & Lincoln - happy days when our away support often dwarfed the home support, despite our lowly position. This period was the start of our decline whilst the Pigs' fortunes were on the up - but all this did was cement my love for the Blades and hatred of the Pigs.
I'm now in my 40's and love the Blades and hate the Pigs now as much as I did as a teenager. Of course, given how massive the Pigs are (my arse) it follows that some of my friends support them. People I get on with in the world outside of football. But as a group of fans I still detest them - their delusions of grandeur, that stupid fkin bouncing, the fact that many of them seem to be rather thick.
Of course, being a Blade means a lot of lows. But there have been some fantastic highs along the way too. Winning 5-2 at Leicester to confirm promotion to the top flight & then hearing the Pigs had lost at home to be relegated - it just doesn't get better than that. Winning at Darlington to take the 4th Division title - with 10,000 Blades in a crowd of 11,000! The play off semi-final victories under Warnock. The "Bobby Bobby Davison" 3-1 win at the Sty. The 3-1 at home to the Pigs and Oh Lord Michael Brown's screamer. And many, many other great days - last minute winners, just about every away victory.
As I mentioned earlier, there's been lots of downs too. I used to think these would get easier as I got older but to be honest, for me, they don't. I was absolutely gutted after Saturday's match & still can't fathom how so many of our players could perform so poorly when it mattered so much. It's still gnawing away at me now. But, as usual, I'll get over it. It's my team - disappointments will never change that.
I don't go to as many games as I used to - family commitments don't allow - but I'm still a ST holder & go to every home game & the odd away game. But even when I'm not there, if there's a match on it's at the forefront of my mind. I still love going to matches - the build up, seeing friends for the pre-match drink - but the result is still really important for me. If we win or get a decent draw I'm happy - if we do that playing good, exciting football I'm even happier. I've recently started taking my young son. For him it's still more a day out and a bit of an adventure - and I hope he will grow to love the Blades the way I do.
I've never considered myself a "happy clapper" or a "knocker". I say what I feel from match to match and issue to issue - and fully accept there is sometimes little consistency in what I say! I sometimes criticise the players or the manager if I think they deserve it. What I would never do is put down SUFC or our fans (who in my view are incredibly passionate & loyal) - nor will I accept anyone else putting down my club or bigging up the Pigs!
I'll keeping watching the Blades as long as health & finances allow. And my love for the Blades is with me for life.
