I don't care if we get relegated

(quote="Darren, post: 566537, member: 2293"]Thats wrong. Had we lost by two we would have still have gone down. We would have had the same GD as Wigan, but would have gone down having scored fewer goals.

Had we lost by one, Wigan would have needed to beat us by two and a draw would have seem us safe. It was thus entirely reasonable for Warnock to play defensively.[/quote]

Agreed. But I think we failed to anticipate just how 'up for it' Villa would be.

In answer to the title of the thread I do care very much if we get relegated. We have already had two relegations and the slide has not been stopped. In fact the opposite has happened - the slide has gathered more momentum. If we go down again, there is no guarantee that we won't fall even further.

This is an interesting thread. I understand where the OP is coming from. We've sunk this low, so it doesn't really matter if we sink any lower, right? But the worse things get, the more you lose perspective.

This concept applies with money too. There's probably a name for it, but I don't know it (Walthy?). If you lost £50 gambling, losing another £50 would annoy the hell out of you. But if you lost £1,500 gambling, another £50 would seem irrelevant. But £50 is still £50.

Modify that a bit to a situation that more people will understand - let's say something is for sale in a shop at £50, but you know that by driving 15 minutes up the road to another shop, you can get the same item for £25. You'd drive the 15 minutes, everyone would. But let's say we're trying to buy something that costs £5,000 and there's a shop a 15 minute drive away selling the same item for £4,975. You're probably not going to take the 15 minute journey, even though it's a £25 saving, just like in the first example.

I agree that many of the teams, players and grounds are just as shit in division 4 as in division 3, but take a step back and have a think about it. Just because we've sunk this low, we shouldn't be okay about sinking any lower.

I personally dont think division 4 did us any harm , apart from owls fans pretending it proves we are worse , which of course we arent ,in fact its one of my favourite seasons ever, the fans were closer knit and more determined than I can ever remember and Darlington is up there with Leicester, Cardiff and Cardiff away

It was a good season and very enjoyable, but the side that went down was in 1981 was better than the current side. It should have never come anywhere near getting relegated in the first place and didn't need a great deal of tinkering with to make us serious promotion contenders. If the current side gets relegated (which is beginning to look quite likely) I have no confidence in it mounting any sort of promotion push.

I agree with the sentiment regarding our season in Div 4 - to some of us of a certain age it was a fantastic season. I enjoyed almost every game. However, I think this time would be totally different. It will be a very long road back and not sure we just wouldn't keep going downwards.

we couldnt possibly be any lower in faith than when Givens missed the spot kick, at least wed know we got straight back up, lets face it it seemed very unlikely at that time too
but to be honest dont think we will be going there

1) Dont assume just because we go down, we'll be back up.
2) My big worry is the pool of future UTD fans. Not so much losing them to South Barnsley, more likey to teams like Man City. There's a much bigger conversation about Sky, Prem, etc etc, but we're doing oursleves no favours by sinking lower and lower.

1981-82 season isnt one of my favourites but there were a few memorable matches. I remain embarrassed that we were in that division same for the seasons spent in the third tier
