HUGE Praise for Adkins & the boys

Gillingham could fall away as the season progresses as their squad is very small, unlike ours.
Mind you they have set off at a good pace under the fairly new manager.

Don't think any of the players that lost against Fulham in mid week played today.

All today's players were fresh and still full of confidence.
It's getting a bit surreal how we seem to be winning so comfortably
And we still have plenty of room for improvement.
Reed played mid week

Great result. Hat goes off to Adkins and the team today. Long way to go yet unforunately but early signs are good.

Just hope we can show some real ambition with these two incomings Nige is talking about and we'll have a good chance of promotion.

A great marker to put down with the rest of the division, although I think the Fulham result will have had little to do with today, given it was a 2nd XI that played Tuesday night.

Fantastic win today, a great team performance. Real togetherness at the minute... fans and players United together !!

Well done to the travelling blades who really spurred on the lads to the win, just wish I could have been a part of it instead of behind the goal which was pretty surreal.

Wish we hadn't so long to wait before the next leg game

Wow there, early days and he would have to go some bloody way to even begin to do what Dave Bassett achieved with buttons rather than real money. And until Adkins says the following I won't consider him close to the great man.

“ We couldn't hit a donkey's arse with a frying pan. ”

My favorite Bassett quote was "first half, we done too much fanny dangle".

Don't want to think too hard about what he was talking about but we all knew exactly what he meant. As you say, Adkins has a long, long way to go before he's close to Bassett or even Warnock for that matter.

A fantastic result today and a win that was unthinkable following the dismal capitulation at Gillingham. It's still early days but the recent signs are encouraging...........like most on here I would like to see a couple of signings before the transfer windows closes but let's not forget...we have several excellent players to return from injury. Get them back and firing and we can be optimistic for the season ahead. Well done to NA and the players you have made me a very happy Blade tonight!!!

Seriously "fatty foulkes"?? You saying that you walked out of the Priestfield and thought "yup.........signs are promising...I can see us taking 6 points off Peterboro and Swindon"!!!!????? If you did you must have supped some seriously strong...borderline hallucinogenic ales prior to that match........................but if you did then fair play to you..............because I and every other seriously pee'd off Blade on our coach bloody well didnt !!!

  • I'd seen pre-season (I think this is important - otherwise Gillingham just looked like the same shite only much worse)
  • I knew Adkins' track record
  • Big defeats are often much easier to put right than narrow ones bc the problems are organisational: Long, speed of play and a centre half and we'd be fine - and Long might be OK now
In fact I had a very quick word with Jim Phipps who was on the away end after the game, and said as much to him.

No he hasn't. He has three promotions and no relegations on his CV. Ol' Big Nose and Dinosaur Dave are not in the same class as a proper "football" manager.

My world, old hoofers die hard, don't they....

Not wishing to be pedantic but wasn't it a cow's arse with a banjo.

I'd like Adkins to say someone has the brains of a rocking horse too. (Said by Bassett about Tracey)
My personal favourite Bassett quote was, "one of our players would have to get gang raped in the box to win a pen" - so beautifully not PC!

Getting a bit carried away starting to compare Adkins to previous managers after only 5 league games! In defence of that 'Dinosaur Dave' though, he took over one of the worst sides I've ever witnessed in blades shirts and transformed us with fuck all money to spend into first division competitors. We can all moan about style, but I'll take results and success over style any day of the week. To quote the great Bill Shankly, "I love playing West Ham, they play great football, and we always beat them".

Sorry Pinch but you are talking liquid grade shite dismissing Bassett like that. 2 successive promotions and keeping us in the top league in spite of the board continually pulling the rug from under him. The football wouldnt work now I grant you but do not disrespect what an achievement that was at the time. Leicester away, Forest away (twice), Southampton away, West Brom away and double over the pigs as well as our first FA Cup semi final since Noah was a lad. Ridiculous signings like Deane and Agana for peanuts. Nathan Blake.

I had some of my greatest experiences watching Bassett teams play as did many on here. Shame on you for dismissing the man's achievement.

Akdins Out.
S24SU In.

Well it'd be interesting to see the forum try to run the team

Who's this Akdins - surely we aren't now being managed by a curry house proprietor? :)

Ha! The forum managing the club - we'd never agree on what team to put out! Maybe we'd have to do it by those interesting poll buttons o_O

Bassett and Warnock have SEVEN promotions each.
Adkins does have a relegation with Scunthorpe on his CV.

Never let the facts get in the way of a childish name-calling session though eh?

It's six promotions for Dino Dave, actually. Shall we complete the facts by mentioning the number of relegations?

Can we have an acknowledgement that both were found wanting at the highest level?

Shall we admit that Bassett hadn't a clue once his crude pub football was worked out by proper coaches and managers?

Let's have a look at the attendances at The Lane under DD. He drove thousands of proper football fans away.

Watch the "Crazy Gang" video and try not to cringe with embarrassment at the incessant launching of the ball from back to front, without a single thought of actually passing it to one another. That's Bassett's legacy to the beautiful game. He gets a single paragraph and it's edged in black.

Once hoof died he became increasingly unemployable. He flopped at Barnsley, Forest and Leicester. Nobody has wanted his "skills" since 2002.

Only at s2 are the likes of Warnock and Bassett put on a Shankly-like pedestal. Shall we go back to the old leather ball, held together by a lace?

Welcome to the 20th century...

Why is it necessary to keep harking back to the dinosaurs? There was no reason to mention either him or Warnock and to suggest that NA had a 'long way to go to match them"?

The difference is NA's teams have played proper football. Bassett was and remained a hoofer. Once it became obsolete he couldn't adapt and fell away, just like his prehistoric namesakes. Once Deane and Agana were gone it stopped working and by the end he'd lost the plot and people were wanting him out. History has been re-written by Bladey Blades since, including a certain Wembley semi-final when, I hate to say it, we hardly got a kick against some proper footballers who embarrassed us in the most one-sided 2-1 you've ever seen.

Let's have a bit of balance, eh?

Because someone else said he could be the best manager since Harris. Hence there was a historical reference. In my lifetime Bassett gave us the best results over a period of time hence he is the benchmark. Oddly enough I'm generally on your side of the fence when it comes to playing football the right way, but I can also look back in time and say that in its day Bassett put a side together that was successful and for everyone bar you a joy to watch. In pure excitement terms it was the best.

Don't chuck the Bladey Bladeness badge in my direction because it won't stick. I have moved on and in the now I think we have the best manager we could possibly of hoped for. The players as they are can get promotion and with a couple of additions we could trounce this division.

A agree with a lot of what you say, despite the hyperbole. But I can't abide your attitude to Bassett. I agree with you that long ball football in the modern game doesn't work, but I remember Bassett's teams and a lot of the time the main focus was getting the ball wide and playing with wingers, and it was more direct, but it wasn't 'just' hoofing. But also, that man reversed decades of decline for Sheffield United, and got us back to the top flight, and it's just bollocks about turning people away. As a reference:

"Let's have a look at the attendances at The Lane under DD. He drove thousands of proper football fans away."
Well I'm a proper football fan and Dave Bassett's teams solidified my support for this club, and got me to see my team at Wembley which I never thought I'd see growing up in the 80s.

Bearing in mind the mid 80s where we regularly used to get under 10k. We were one of the best 10 supported clubs in the land in 1991-92 at the peak of his team.
1987-88 10,207
1988-89 12,222
1989-90 16,989
1990-91 21,461
1991-92 22,097
1992-93 18,801
1993-94 19,562
