I have no doubt that many people sign up for the army out of a sense of nationalism/patriotism or in other words, a love for their country. What is behind that love though?

Is it the flag, the state's figurehead, the national anthem? I have my doubts, I personally think it's more to do with a love of their community, and a desire to uphold freedom, protect their friends and family and just a general fondness for the area they were born - none of which has anything really to do with their nationality, at least in my opinion.

I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of those who enlisted, and ask; what would my motivations be?
Empathy and compassion for the victims of the escalating war, stopping an 'evil' force before it gets too close to home, maybe just a vague sense of morality- sticking up for an underdog.

Of course I'm bothered about the blades: I 'love' football. I was born in Sheffield and my Dad took me to go watch the blades with him, so by extension, I support Sheff Utd. I've no doubt that if I was born in another county that's fanatical about football, I would have supported my local team there too.

As for the kit and the badge: its inconsequential. I dont support the team any less when they don the away strip, which changes every year. As aesthetically pleasing and nostalgic as the badge is, it's changed several times in the past and it will likely change again in the future.

As for a sense of belonging; yes, I do feel I belong. That's down the community though, and the people I go with. Taking the metaphor back to patriotism: It's possible to love your community and the people you live with, without being being a nationalist.
Loving the patch of ground you were born on doesnt have to mean loving the state you were born in. I'm sure humans have loved mother nature and their surroundings before countries and nations were ever a thing.
