Looks like you were right. Will have to think hard on which match Shalalalafenoughty 's photo was

I think I may have the answer. I've found a photograph of the Chelsea game taken in September 1971 (page 302 in Blades Biography). 40,651 crowd and a 1.0 win! If you use a magnifying glass, the golden goal times match the times on Shalalalafenoughty's photo.

When I started going the cricket pavillion was still there, behind the South Stand in what is now the car park, and some of the old terracing on the cricket side was still there too, though unused after the stand went up

You mean 15 mins before the Chelsea match? Our previous home game was against Spurs. The score was 1-1 at half time. Would Dearden's goal be timed at 37 mins 52 secs and Martin Peters' equaliser timed at 48 mins 9 secs? I remember the ref blew for half time just after Peters' equaliser and there was no time for us to re-start the first half

Yes. It is the Chelsea game. The Blades Biography book has the clock at 3:15 and the Golden Goal times on both photos match. I can't remember how the Golden Goal times were recorded but if it was an injury time Spurs equaliser I suppose it could have been recorded at 48.9.

My only knowledge of the games has been gleaned from the internet, and there was no record of the timings of the goals in the Spurs game - other than 1.1 at half time and 3.1 at full time.

Well spotted Grey. Will look in that book when I get home. Cheers

I was at all those games mentioned..Spurs scored late in both halves in the 2-2 game..I was behind the goal on the Kop,and can still remember Martin Peters ghosting in on the back stick just on half time with a header at the Lane End..I know Dearden got United's goal earlier in the game..according to a Spurs report I read they put the goal down on 6 minutes, but could be wrong...Scullion put United in front again and Gilzean late on for Spurs.

I stand corrected re the score! Was a bit bleary eyed at the time of posting the score and had the previous home game (Huddersfield Town) to Spurs in my mind

Just dug out the programme from that Chelsea game..doesn't mention the time of Dearden's goal..I can remember him ending up in the back of the net though as the picture shows.image.jpegBilly's Goal v Spurs I mean.

I'm not usually one for poetry but I was feeling a bit nostalgic yesterday and so I penned the following:

4 o’clock on a Saturday,
“We’ll set off after the wrestling”
41 bus to Manor Top,
“Don’t go upstairs, too smoky”
Walk down Prince,
Tuffolds Close, cuddle from Grandma
Grandad kicks the dog.

Teatime results, United win at Burnley,
“You’re still going down” says Uncle John
No Currie and Reece for tea
Sausage on a fork,
Slice of bread and gravy
Doctor Who, The Man From UNCLE,
TV Times, Titbits and Reveille.

Barnard’s sweet shop, nice warm glow
Pick up the Green ‘Un – BLADES TOO SHARP
Back on the bus, “is there any chance, Dad?”
“If we beat Chelsea , we might have some hope”
Joe’s Ice Cream Van – where is she now?
“She’s at the top of Carr Forge Road!”

Back home for Match of The Day,
Football League Ladders,
Hot chocolate, and it’s time for bed
Big match next Saturday
“What’s it like in Division 2, Dad?”
“Oh, son, it’s not so bad”
