A bit of a change of pace from 'new manager threads' but I have been away the last few days with work down in the West Country and stopping overnight in a hotel with work colleagues from around the country.

Anyway whilst a number of us were watching the England Game talk turned to football and the respective clubs we all support. There were about eight different teams who we followed and this is a summary of their views on SUFC

1. We are not well liked, though not as disliked as Leeds, most of them would favour the pigs if they were watching a Sheffield Derby on TV.

2. Main reasons given for disliking us were Neil Warnocks years, Ched, sacking Wilson whilst in the top six and Chris Morgan elbowing Hume (Tevez not an issue surpringly but there were no West Ham fans there)

3. Most of them said we would not be back in top flight anytime in the next decade,but they did think we would be back in the championship in the next couple of years.

4. None of them thought we would be relegated this season.

Instability keeps you in the news. Most of ours ills are down to poor choices in managers. Until we get this right all of the above will stand.

I do believe we are trying to do the right thing, we just keep hitting it wide

Not many like us down to the Warnock years but yet brush over the rather big injustice that was the Tevez affair which sort of fucked us a club.

Had it been their club they would have been fuming but everyone seems to have forgotten about it now. I guess more so down to the Evan's case and it doesn't look much better signing Marlon King.

Anyway like all us football fans we are rather fickle and if we randomly beat Man Utd in a cup match their opinions of us may change again.

If we are not well liked, it means we are doing something right. I'd rather be disliked than be a club like SWFC of whom no one has an opinion either way, because they have spent 13 years doing fuck all.

In the last 13 years, we've been promoted once, relegated twice, in three play off finals, an FA Cup Semi Final, a League Cup Semi Final and had games such as The Battle of Bramall Lane in 2002. Boring it ain't been.

As for Warnock, I know a couple of QPR fans down here, who both enjoyed telling me how much they hated him on a regular basis - until he took over at Loftus Rd and got them promoted that is, then they would have happily let him shag their sisters. He's a pantomime villain when he's the opposition, but tends to get people onside when he's on your side...

I would wager that 95% of football fans outside Sheffield have no opinion either way about Sheffield United. Casual acquaintances can't even remember I support United, though it is generally the second thing they find out about me. I see them a week later and they will say "how are Sheffield Wednesday" doing - Wednesday being the more memorable Sheffield team as they have a unique name.

That's because we actually got to appear on TV on regular basis when they were our managers. Not because we were "shameful and embarrassing" back then. Exactly, this "anti-football" jibe is only used by some (one?) of our own supporters. It goes on and on like some bloody water boarding torture. Most people i've spoken to over the years are indifferent towards United. Many have been duped into thinking Wendy are some super-club with millions of supporters (so see United as some bit-part club), the older ones remember Tony Currie and the younger ones generally liked Warnock because he was a gobby "comedy" act.

I think (in recent times) its been a series of events that have caused the public to turn their nose up whenever we're mentioned:
The premiership Derbies/semi final - were very much in the public "eye." Everyone thought that wendy were a great footballing side & nice/safe Trev was their saviour. Harry was very much the opposite of all that and the public probably viewed him as a bit of a wide boy/thug & United as second class citizens. I guess the majority of neutrals would gravitate towards the pigs.
That made those derby victories very sweet for us: Chris Woods getting smacked in the face - oh how we laughed! (let's park wembley memories for a min, at least Arsenal did the business afterwards !)
When Warnock arrived this feeling probably continued/strengthened as he rubbed everybody up the wrong way with his contraversial views and bizzare tv interviews. This gave joe public another reason to dislike United.

Under Warnock and Bassett at we were noticed and had an identity. We haven't had it for decades before, or ever since.

I couldn't care either way. But basically, nobody cares about the vast majority of clubs. If you want to be noticed, being disliked as the most realistic way. If you don't like the club being disliked.....diddums.

I think as a comparable experiment, we could take a similar club of a similar size also fallen on hard times and see how much we know about their managers and their styles and what feelings we have about them - Wolves.

Off the top of my head, I can only name Dean Saunders and Mick McCarthy as their recent managers, the former because he used to play for us and the latter because he is a "character". I have no idea what style of football they played and I have no feelings about Wolves either way.
