How much will we spend

Think the question could do with a rephrase. We don't know how much we 'will' spend. How much 'should' we spend or how much 'can' we spend are more suitable.

Also, do you mean net or gross spend? (Really sorry, economics degree coming out here)

He means how much will we spend.

As it says in the title.

A question which requires a difinitive answer even though there isn't one! Unless he can predict the future with absolute accuracy.... Never thought of that I suppose!

I thought Billy Davies at Forest got it right in his plea for some spending in the JTW. 'Davies referenced 2009-10 when Forest were second in January but missed out on promotion after deciding not to bolster their squad.'

More relevant now than ever. The days of cheapo signings hoping it will come off are long gone and money speaks more than ever. In the Championship - where we hope to get, eventually - you've got teams like Leicester and QPR who have talent in every position, newly minted teams - either from foreign ownership and/or parachute payments, and teams who will always challenge - Ipswich, Burnley, Watford, (next season) Wolves etc.

Looking at that lot makes you realise how far we've gone backwards. Destroying an excellent squad who lost to Burnley in 2009 (Cardiff had a number of near-misses but didn't panic and have got to the PL), flogging owt that's any good, disastrous short time, 'last pay day' signings and failing to hang on to key players such as MacDonald and, looking at Forest and still doing it, Andy Reid and Greg Halford.

Hopefully, HRH can not only stop this endless decline, but reverse it.

I doubt we'll spend much this window, it's more about shipping the crap out.

Annoying as it is, a key indicator is money spent through agents. You have to pay these leeches to get to the good players.

Have a look at what Bournemouth spent last year (about 1/4 of tot spend in the division. Three times next highest, 8 times SUFC) and the Pigs the year before.

If the Prince does have substantial funds he'll spend in the summer.

I think it depends on how realistic those inside the Club feel a push for the play-offs is.

We can all play down our chances and NC would no doubt dismiss them completely if asked directly but there is no reason, with a few astute signings, why we shouldn't be that team who always "puts a run together"......there are after-all 69 points left to play for and 6th place last year was secured with 74 and the year before 73.....49 points from the last possible 69 would get us there so it's certainly not impossible.

IF (and it's a bif if) there is a genuine feeling inside the Club that we can push for the play-offs then we may see the cash splashed, however, if we are happy with survival and stabilisation we will probably see a few ins and outs on-loan with NC looking forward to re-building in the summer.

I can only think of Palace in 2004 making it to the playoffs from such a lowly half way points total (they had 22 points from 22 games).

If they are gamblers they may spend now but I think they will spend big once and do that in the summer.

I cant see a lot being spent in January, I think we will see the squad being re profiled in the Summer
I still expect a few loan signings with a view to a possible purchase in the Summer

We have to try and do as much as we can now before the summer. I don't want to have to rebuild all the team then. If we can get 3/4 players that Clough will want for next season let's get them bedded into the club now. A

A wholesale raft of changes shouldn't be done in one go

didnt sunderland make the play off or go up auto from the championsip when btttom a few years ago with similar games played

No

After 22 games, they had 33 points and were 12th.

I'm not sure people understand how far Weir put us in the shit as far as finishing any hope for this season. We are 3 points off the relegation zone still.

On 21 December 2003, Dowie was appointed manager of Crystal Palace, inheriting a squad with low morale and occupying 19th place in Division One. However, under his leadership, the club went on an impressive run that included 17 wins from 23 games after he took over, until the end of the season, enabling the club to finish in sixth place in the First Division, just scraping into the play-off places.
and we are 17th

We wont 'spend' owt. what will happen is we'll get rid of all the shit and the players that haven't't worked out eg. porter, Taylor, Brandy, McGinn, and so on, and what money we make from them we'll spend on 2 or 3 good quality players. More of a clear out than a spending spree.

If we're 6 points off playoffs going into the last game of January I can see a few quid being spent. We're 5th in the form table and with walsall, notts county, Bradford and Colchester comig up that could happen. In the meantime a couple of loan strikers will do nicely.

Interesting to hear Clough talk on the subject. They have a list of 20 to 30 players and would expect about 10% ie 2 to 3 to turn into deals.

He says activity hots up towards the end of the window.

Initial enquiries to Championships clubs start with them asking for 100% contribution to their wages. He says by the end of the window it is down to 75% or in some instances 50% for some and he says you can then get value.

I like the way he candidly talks about this.

Their own parking space and a nights stay in the hotel should tempt any player to sign for us.

Can see mainly loan players being the sensible way.
Why buy players for this division who they'll only have to get rid of in order to bring in better players for the Championship ?
