How did McCabe become a successful businessman?

Thanks GBS. I agree with your point of view on McCabe. On a long car journey a few weeks ago I mused about what i might have done differently with regard to the big decisions Kev has made and on most of them (not all), at the time I would have done the same. Here goes - not intended as a complete list or necessarily in order, Yes means I would in his position at the time have done the same thing:

Appointing Warnock - Yes
Being tight with Warnock to get the debt down in early years - yes
Internationalising the club thro partnerships etc - Yes
Supporting Warnock finally with money for transfers - Yes
Not renewing Warnock's contract - No
Appopinting Robson - NO no no no no no. God knows why he listened to that prat from Manchester - whatsisname
Sacking Robson - Yes
Progressing the Tevez thing through court - Yes I'd like to think so
Appointing Blackwell - Yes
Selling Beattie - Hmm No
Keeping Blackwell after Wembley 2009 - Yes
Selling Kyles - inevitable I think - Yes
Supporting Blackwell with Kyles' money - Yes
Sacking Blackwell - Yes but timing was lousy, I would probably have hung on a bit or sacked him before season started.
Appointing Speed - Have to say Yes - obvious successor
Appointing Adams - Yes but would have gone for O Driscoll first choice
Sacking Adams - No probably not
Appointing Wilson - No but I wasn't against the decision like some

Point of all this is I don't have much room to criticise what has happened. What would you have done/

I agree apart from the scrubbed out.

Looks like McCabe knows best as Wilson appears ok to me

I personally would prefer McCabe in charge than some foreign ne'er do well who will be here for a couple of years and then leave the club in the state Portsmouth find themselves in.

My sentiments entirely. Good shout Sitters.

I asked myself the same question as the original poster. I dont know how someone who crassly jumped on the Jessica Ennis bandwagon could be a successful businessman, however I'm glad to hear that he and his family are genuine Blades, Shoreham Street and all that and that someone who wasn't born with a silver spoon has been so successful.

He has Integrity, and is a very Nice Guy.

Nice bloke, I would agree with. Integrity? Not so sure here. Better than Johnny Foreigner? For every Foreigner who doesn't give a shit there is a Craig Whyte. For every Portsmouth there is a Manchester City.

I don't dislike McCabe as a man because I don't know him. But I question not only his integrity but also his sanity. To run a club well for several years. To build a fantastic facility that wasn't out of place at the top table and remain in the black. To have an academy that was up there with the best. Brilliant. So what the hell happened when we got relegated?

It was utterly insane to give all our money and future funds to a man like Robson. In fact I wouldn't have given up our future like that to anyone.

Sacking Warnock was not an issue to me. The man had done what he has done before and after, run out of steam and started scrapping with everyone in an attempt to blame anyone but himself for our situation.

His replacement was critical however, and we couldn't have got it more wrong. We threw the kitchen sink financially at getting up in one season. Its the reason we are here today with Premiership facilities in League One.

Ventures in China etc were ridiculous pipe dreams. As was the world cup bid we all knew we wouldn't get and furthermore the country wasn't going to get with Blatter etc at the helm.

On balance he was a great chairman and I actually think only now is he starting to right the wrongs of the past few seasons. Is his reputation damaged beyond repair? That depends on what goes off on the pitch this season. If we continue in League One you have to say we are in a worse position than when he took over.

Bladesway I was talking in regards to Business, also I knew Him before He was the Chairman. He certainly is a Blade, He is one of us. Has He made mistakes, Yes. Is He as pissed off as you and Me, bet your last pound on it that He is

I always thought he had a reputable chain of fishmongers.

lets not forget his expertise is property
are we proud how Bramall Lanes been developed

I was proud until we stopped owning the ground.

And as for Robson - just about every Blades fan on every Blades board thought it would be a disastrous appointment.

And I don't doubt it or that he is as you report. But being a nice bloke and a Blade do not mean he hasn't being at least in some large part responsible for where we are. We can all speculate and blame people in order but his name is in there. Its part of being in charge I'm afraid.

I think being a Blade and a decent bloke has probably saved him from screaming hoards in the car park asking for him to be flame grilled in the hospitality suite.

If you still know him then perhaps you can tell him one thing from me (if you would be so kind). I know we are in a mess. Don't tell us how many millions this has cost you because people don't generally have a lot of sympathy with millionaires telling everyone how hard life is. Just admit you have made some big mistakes and tell us what you are going to do to put it right. That you are going to stick around until this mess is sorted out. That you will stop hairbrained stunts like Chengdu and just put us back in the Championship. Personally I don't want multi million pound promises (look where that has got us). Just tell us you will back the manager and get us the hell out of this league. Oh and stick to what you say you are going to do.

I don't speak on behalf of everyone. Just me. If he puts United back in the Championship with a team playing well and (hopefully) Wilson at the helm, at least we will be back where we began. What happens from there is beyond everyones knowledge and comprehension. The Premiership and Europe in 5 years is a million light years away. It isn't a fair expectation.

If Kevin McCabe delivers that I believe the majority of Blades will at least be able to sleep at night knowing they can be proud of being a blade rather than languishing with Crawley in League fucking One. His reputation will be repaired from my perspective. That may not matter to him, but it does to me.

P.S Thats a few thing, but I don't do one word answers :)

I can't work it out.
He's a Blade, clever fooker, millionaire and wants the best for us....then how the fook are we where we are?
If he was a pig, dunce, skint and wanted the worst for us i cud understand.

Beighton, I understand how you feel. Its true we should not be in this Division, but we have been here before. With the support we have we shouldn't be, but thats part of being a Blade. PS great Forum.
