How big can we make Bramall lane?

With Bramall Lane not having acres of space to build on, what could we build it to if money were no object and us being a regular prem team fighting for Europe.

Could we make it any bigger than this?

our highest attendance was 68,287 we just need to put the ground back to how it was

Dkc, Digging the pitch lower to allow for more terraces of seats, it was probably me. Bramall Lane is right down close to the level of the river Sheaf and the Porter Brook, its at the bottom of the valley and tends to bogginess as it is.
One of the End stands would have to be moved back to allow for room to dig down anyhow, so I think its a tricky thing to do all round (literally).

Yes you're right I remember now. Not sure if the pitch being ten feet lower would make us subject to more flooding if we had a good drainage system in place though. I'd guess that the pitch is 15 feet higher than the Sheaf, which is about half a mile away.

As for moving one of the ends behind the goal, I'm not sure if that's necessary as there is a fair bit of space at each end. But if it were, it would be possible to reduce how much the BL end encroaches and make it steeper at the same time.

Could be worth the club doing a survey if we ever got established in the PL

It would be easier to rebuild the kop further away from the pitch when the time comes for its upgrade then everything can move East, plenty of room behind the kop to do this. Then extend the South stand and John St stand to the kop with proper corners none of this student apartments rubbish, finally re-build the lane end bigger and move it East closer to the pitch.

And how much do you think that would cost? This is real life, not The fucking Sims you know.

We;re talking about if we were ever established in the Prem. Just a couple of seasons would pay for some serious rebuilding. Look at Swansea, Cardiff, Fulham etc.

Fulham's rebuilding is not serious in the least, in fact its makeshift and shabby.

What happened was, they procured one of the best designs for rebuilding a stadium on its original site that I saw from a British club, keeping the Stevenage Road Stand facade, it would have been a modest little beauty.

Trouble is, u have a local population of fairly wealthy young nimbies most of whom will be from a privately educated background, even if they cannot get on the waiting list at the Hurlingham, they'll prefer Rugby to the real thing. They objected en masse to the planning application. The resulting new rooves at Craven C are the minimum the club could do to provide covered seating by the FA rules.

Both welsh teams MOVED u know.... they both share their grounds with significant Rugby teams (whatever happened to the Arms Park?) and I think both of them rebuilt before they had been in the premier league?

btw. Fulham could have had this ground;

Instead what they have now is this;

nice how they lined up the columns supporting the roof with the penalty spot. It is shabby, it is not chic.

until weve been in the prem for a couple of seasons we should leave it all. ive read a few things that say the kop was only meant for 2-3 seasons,it was all a rush job,it was at the same time we had alot of money/board issues so they left it as it is.i personally would like the kop to be on a steeper gradient and another tier added to where the car park is.

No, there was a company involved Mott MacDonald, who had the contract to build the new John Street Stand. As mentioned before, this was a sub- optimal design but SUFC had to go ahead with it, contractually, I believe.

I don't think MacDonald, the owner in the mid-1990s had anything to do with them, the names were just coincidental, and I haven't a clue whether I spelt them right either.

Agreed, its all make-believe till there is a team to underpin the stadium (although building new grounds does seem to boost the teams, witness the south welsh clubs, Hull etc.). btw the Sheaf is only about 300 yards from the pitch, its nice to go and contemplate the wildlife/meaning of life there while recuperating from a home defeat now and again.

OK, to clarify. Mott MacDonald is the engineering company, Mike McDonald was the owner. The high quality fast-food outlet is Rothwell's of Market Place, Doncaster.

Mott MacDonald DID build the John Street Stand, I'm not sure if they built the Kop roof which was seriously out of date when it went up. Eastwoods designed it I believe.

Cheap and none too cheerful is a reasonable description especially if you are taller than 5' 5" and don't like your knees being scratched by the seat in front. Steeper it certainly needs to be. Btw I had the pleasure of sitting in the main stand at White Hart Lane and because it is slightly curved, it affords MUCH better views of the pitch than any of the stands at Bramall Lane (and it has two tiers).

What the club ought to be considering is how to get the existing capacity of 32 700 ? used fully for big matches instead of having it slashed to 29 000, which I think will be the crowd tomorrow night (though I hope I'm proved wrong). This would be a FAR cheaper way of making the stadium bigger than any other more fantastic (costly) options.

Wasn't it one of McDonald's companies who rebuilt the kop?

Wasn't it built by one of Stephen Hinchcliffe's companies called En Tout Cas..? I may be totally off the mark as I'm just going on my fading memory but I know there was a fair bit of criticism aimed at Hinchcliffe for the total cock up they made with the rake - or lack of it.

En Tout Cas dealt in all weather pitches .

Lets get out of league 1 , stabilise in the championship , then when in the premiership , think about increasing the capacity.

Planned and Preventative Maintenance on a yearly basis is good enough for me . Gone are the days for SUFC of great stadium , shit side.

SUFC have got another year to run on their 2013 time limit extension to their 2009 application to develop the Kop. They also have an application pending at the moment to extend the time limit for their 2009 outline permission to develop the South Stand, so they must be serious about developing the Lane as and when.

Time extension to outline planning permission for South Stand re-development approved by the council yesterday. Just build the fucker!

Lets get out of league1 and back in the premiership first before we start messing around with the ground. Professional fees alone will be over £1m quid . Money better spent on players especially a CF.
