How can we have played more matches than Wednesday?

For a start, between 1995-6 and 1999-2000 we played 8 more games than them every season, as they were in the PL (38 games) and we were in Div 1 (46 games). It'll be differences like that which cause us to have played a different number of games.

But they were founded 22 years before us and they've only had 6 more seasons in the top flight than us.

They started playing in the league in the same season we did, not 22 years earlier.

The 6 seasons more in the top flight is equivalent to 48 games difference these days, and there are other times when we played more league games than them.

in all its only 40 different now , it was 48 but our 1 season in the prem in 2006 cut it back as we played 8 league games less,
38 in a prem season compared to 46
it varied a bit when it used to be 42 games in the top flight and 46 in the third so that threw the totals out
