So for years I thought I knew a fact that Sheffield was the biggest city to not host European football. But out with a pig tonight he thinks they did in '93. So what have I got wrong with this 'fact' and what is the correct version? Biggest city to not host champions league/european Cup? Or still biggest city because they only played away for their game?

Biggest can o' worms you've opened there isn't so much the question about where Euro footie has been played, but how you define the 'size' of a city.... we get our knickers in enough of a twist about this when it's English cities let alone every single one across Europe!

Wednesday have been in the Fairs cup/ UEFA cup/ Europa cup level in the early 60's and early 90's.

So the fact might be "biggest city to have never played at European cup/ Champions League level".

Pigs definitely played Kaiserslautern at the sty if my memory is correct

United are the biggest club in Europe never to have qualified for a European competition. Champions League, Conference League, Europa League and their predecessors (UEFA Cup, Fairs Cup, Cup Winners' Cup, European Cup).

Biggest on what criteria? Just curious how that could be judged

Obviously size is subjective. But I also believe we are the biggest club in Europe to have never played in any proper continental competition (not even the Intertoto!).

There are various objective facts that determine size, it's just about deciding which is the most significant of the following:

Trophies won, average attendances (current and historical), highest ever attendance, stadium size, seasons in the top flight, wealth/ finances
international reputation, potential (local population).

United must be the biggest club to have never qualified for European competition. Club size is always subjective but it's pretty clear we're the biggest in England, and as other countries in Europe only have a limited number of clubs as big as us, it's fair to say we probably are the biggest in the whole continent.

How depressing is this by the way? Sometimes I wonder what I did in my last life to deserve being born a Sheffield United fan.

Just try to name another club in Europe that is bigger than us that have never played in Europe.

You can't because it's impossible.

I was just asking because if it was based on ground capacity it wouldn't have been us, but it's crazy a club our size has never managed it

Yes, the 🐖’s had a brief flirtation in Europe in the nineties after they finished 3rd. That’s where they picked up the club band nonsense and all that bouncing bollocks.

From an old90 minutes article……

“Why are Sheffield United a big club? It's not really because they've just made it back into the top flight, it's not because they've won a load of stuff, it's just because...they are. Sometimes you're a big club because you're a big club.”

Massive club, Fatty Foulke proves it

He “thinks” they did?

Of course the massive have hit European big time, do you not remember the 3000 to Spora on a thursday night?

Crystal Palace have never played in Europe. When we are in the PL we average more than they do but there is no doubt they have done better than us in the last decade but I don’t know if that makes them “bigger”.

The same can be said for Charlton but since we were both relegated in 2007 we have enjoyed the better history.

We played Udinese at the Lane mid nineties, in the prestigious Anglo Italian cup
What a great night. An overhead kick into the top corner, 3 Blades sent off, and Harry Bassett getting sent off for a gesture he'd learnt from the owner of a local Italian, didn't realise how offensive it was, and nearly started a riot with their bench. Battle of Bramall Lane the hipster prequel.

And its Sheff United... Sheff United FC
We're by far the greatest team,
That Europe's never seen...

Fair enough. Their fans don’t seem to consider that “real” Europe though.
Debateable. It offered a route into the UEFA Cup, and clubs needed to qualify for it, but most top clubs declined. Palace qualified in a relegation season, and lost to Samsunapor.

Regardless, their stadium only holds about 25k and we have won more domestic honours than them, so it would be hard to argue that Palace are the 'bigger' club.
