Higdon over Sammon

While I wouldn't say Sharp or Sammon are particularly fast. From what iv'e seen they never stop running and what's more make intelligent runs and know where to position themselves as a passing move unfolds. Sammon's link up and hold up play is particularly impressive.

Higdon struggles to put one foot in front of another at times.

What makes you think Sharp is anything but our No.1 striker, 1st name on the teamsheet?

Rotation. It's a long season and it will probably be a rotation of the three. Whichever way round, I wouldn't want to see any of them come on after 70 when I was starting to get knackered.

You may be right, but if so Higdon is a very slow starter in the goal scoring department

Wrote this a few weeks ago - now eating my words he he! I've been very impressed with Sammon, obviously hes scored a couple, but his link up with Sharp and the way he makes space for others by dragging defenders all over the place has been great. Would still keep Higdon though for the same reasons as before, we need more than just one big man option. He needs to take a leaf out of Sammons book movement wise though!
 
S2s "Big Man" obsession in full flow if this thread is anything to go by.

Good players are good players. Size doesn't matter.

I refuse to accept that it is "necessary" to have a big un up top.

It is not necessary, but Nigel Adkins has used a big striker in all games apart from Gillingham, is he obsessed?

Size is one of many attributes it would be foolish to neglect, but it doesn't have to be up front. As a team we have to cope though, and two small strikers can be a problem if there's not much height elsewhere.

If you look at last weekend's Premiership games, how many teams did not have a six footer up front? Is it completely coincidental?

Size as an attribute. Is that taken from FIFA 15 !!!

Rooney, Aguero, Berahino, Defoe, Wilson, Vardy, Sakho (?), Kane (?) etc etc. Not nearly as clear cut as you perceive is it ??

I take your point. It's important to have size somewhere in the side or you become vulnerable in the air.

Of the current players available, I just believe strongly that the best 2 up top would be a combination of McNulty Done Adams and Sharp. This would be the most potent strike force in the division. This is incredibly harsh on Sammon who has done very well.

The big man up top is an option I prefer to see employed in the last 15/20 mins of a game when Plan A has not worked. To set out with a Target Man from the outset simply encourages a more direct style of play that I do not favour. I prefer possession football through midfield. Always have, always will. In my opinion, we have a squad of players that should be able to do this. Decent technical footballers for L1. Therefore playing to our strength.

Getting back to the point of the thread, do we keep Higdon as back up to Sammon as the big man ? Or indeed should he feature more prominently ?

Not for me thanks. But in Nigel I trust !!

I did not ask you to list small strikers, I asked how many Premiership teams did not have a six footer up front last weekend.

  • Man Utd is correct (Fellaini is injured)
  • Man City is correct (Bony was sub)
  • WBA had 6'2 Rondon up front
  • Sunderland had 6'1 Graham up front
  • Bournemouth had 6'1 King up front
  • Leicester is correct
  • Sakho at West Ham is 6'1
  • Kane at Tottenham is 6'2


So the answer was 3 of 20 teams did not start a six footer up front last weekend.

I know what you're saying and half agree, but surely they serve as a warning to stop us getting all carried away.

If ever we start getting all 'massive' we need to trot this stuff out.

Remember your roots and stay humble. No 'big club' bollocks needed on here.

If our recent managers had got the best out of those two titans, we’d already be in the premier league.

The untapped potential was enormous (but not as big as higgos gut).
