Hey, we're going to be like Bury!

I honestly don't see why, out of all the stuff mentioned, you've taken such umbrage at this.

The idea would be that it would be self-financing and turn that into profit for the benefit of the social club area and the football club. The room is in a state fit to use without too much doing to it. Greene King have been approached to put a bar in there. The feedback seemed positive - a minuscule outlay filling a gap in the market and utilising a currently underused space in the ground and making some money out of it.

It's not like this is the only thing Garrett is working on. Nor is it the main focus of the football club, to the extent that all energies are on this idea instead of signing players.

Are you saying that revenue raising schemes shouldn't be discussed? Are you honestly complaining that they're trying to make some money? :)

This is where it all falls to pieces just who the hell are Greene King ??? i'm sure they do make some fine ales if you like that sort of stuff but surely we can do better than that and the gnats piss that is called Carling. Why not get some of the smaller local breweries to supply some real ale and pitch it at a price to compete with the local watering holes rather than charging £1 a pint more than anyone else near to the ground. The beer prices in BDTBL are nothing short of a rip off, same goes for the food. Why we contract these things out is a mystery to me when SUFC could employ the same students on the minimum wage and keep ALL the profits. The days of chip butties stinking the place out while you are drinking weak tasteless lager went out in the 70's. The choice of Greene King bitter or Carling mmmmmmm I think I'd be inclined to go to a Whetherspoons or some other pub serving real ale and having a decent menu, drippin cakes don't have the same appeal. If United put their minds to it they could make a fortune on matchday catering, I mean what choice do fans have near the ground other than Man Friday's or the burger vans or the shit served up at rip off prices.
We really should be looking at some of the ideas that seem to be making visits to watch Brighton a much more pleasant matchday expierience.

Is there any reason Greene King had to be approached? Couldn't one of the many micro breweries in the area have been given a chance to provide a bar?

With a lovely little social club and dripping cakes.

Really, really sad to see what is becoming of our once reasonably meaningful football club.

I know the management mean well but it just strikes me as very sad that our beloved club is visiting these places on a regular basis and thinks that a social club etc is what people are bothered about.

You are starting to sound like a L**ds fan.

We are too big for this league blah blah blah we should have been in Europe buy now etc.

Any club can drop like a stone due to shit football or as in Pompey's case complete financial mismanagement. That is football for you and one of the reasons people watch it. Its good for the average fan that "Bigger clubs" can fall from grace and find themselves pottering round the lower leagues.

You ought to be thankful its not a membership only league system where a panel decide what league your in. Something the PL did want to introduce a few years back which we should be thankful never happened despite a number of clubs being in favour of it.

Greene King are the group who currently have an agreement with the club and provide drinks in the suites.

I do agree that local stuff would be good, but understand from landlords that the costs are often prohibitive, as the micro-breweries can't offer the same level of discounting. Will mention it though.

We are the only club in the football league they sponsor. New boss is a big blades fan, I know that for a fact. He's my brother. As for the likes of bury etc, its a fantastic club, welcoming and exemplifies what football clubs can be about. We are in the third tier on merit at the moment and have no god given right to be anywhere else. Anything that brings the fans and the club closer has to be good, just don't expect instant results..

I'm sure for most it goes without saying, but the aim isn't to emulate Bury, they were just mentioned as one example that have a venue creating a good old fashioned sense of belonging and a welcoming venue for those who wish to visit.

The last few times we've been, we've been in their club, had some cheap ale... decent football food and almost insulted the locals by turning down the sarnies they were passing round. I dare say that this year we'll be having a beer and a chat with the locals about their manager.

That's not for everyone (I certainly wouldn't want to do it every week), but for me it's an idea that's needed exploring more actively than it has been for years.

Greene King IPA is a very nice pint when its done properly

Have you ever supped the muck served at the lane LOL, they can keep it in Suffolk for the tractor boys......... another brewery trying to expand nationally by buying up other brewers while doing us a disservice by cutting down on the choice of ales. Maybe the big discount they can offer over smaller local brewers is good if profit is the only concern, you takes your choice nationally brewed muck from the likes of the Bass groups or support local brewers real ales which year on year are becoming ever more popular. Real ale pubs thrive while pubs selling a choice of two brews from the national brewers are closing every other day.

You need to stop taking things I say so seriously, just a bit of fun - I said above I would be more than happy to see a decent place where families can go for a drink and a pie etc - fair play to JG if he gets it sorted. As Raul says though, it'll take alot to change people's routines as we are in a relatively big city with options not a town like Bury which yes has some decent boozers I am sure but as a club is for me totally different in terms of fanbase and potential and a nice little social club is ideal for their needs.

Anyone who thinks I am slagging JG off is so completely wide of the mark as to be farcical.

I just thought it amusing that we are in even the slightest way looking to emulate Bury - but it must be just me.

I also enjoy L1 in most respects so this 'massive' stuff is rubbish as well.

Oh give over mic, you spend most of your time on here trolling, don't try and dress it up any other way.

As for emulating Bury, it doesn't matter who the club is, but if its a method connecting with fans then why not try it.

You will struggle to get a good pint at a venue that only has customers every other week, for four hours only, and sometimes no customers for up to four weeks and none from early may until August. Real ale needs treating very carefully, I doubt any football club could do that effectively. Real ales is also sometime an acquired taste, I don't know the percentage of lager drinkers either. All I'm saying is its not so easy to 'go local ' in this type of venue. If they did I'm sure we would have a thread on the cost of a pint.

But we are talking about a Social Club that could in theory be open every day of the week not just for half time drinks.

My view only, a drinking venue, open every day at the lane would be a financial disaster. Ask the local pubs how busy they are on an average Monday night.

Yes but all they serve is Stones and Carling and they don't do meals.

We have the Kelham Island Brewery on our doorstep. All their regular ales including Pale Rider are available in bottles as well as barrels. It shouldn't be difficult to come to mutually beneficial business arrangements.

As to real ale being an acquired taste - well, at least it has a taste.......

As someone who loves 'real ale', Bradfield Belgian Blue being my local favourite, I still have to say that I'd rather drink a decent lager out of bottles! The sterilisation process it has to go through just kills it for me.

Also Chesterfield and surrounding areas has quite a few micro breweries not including Brampton.
The possibility is there the only question is will the fans get behind it armed with their wallets?
Good of the club to try though, I hope it takes off.

Real ales is also sometime an acquired taste,

It certainly is. I've practiced the art of drinking for many many years and can honestly say that the majority of the real ales that I've tried have tasted as I could only imagine liquid shit to taste like. It all stinks, it's all warm and soupy, and it all has a vile aftertaste....apart from that it's great.....NOT.

A good pint of Magnet was always the best, a good pint of John Smiths a close second, not for me all these shitty wheat beers and hoppy ales, all a bit arty farty to be honest and the only thing that could possibly enhance the flavour is a pair of sandals and a chunky arran sweater.
