The last time we met Villa was on a scorching hot day at Bramall Lane on 1st September 2018. Producing arguably our best footballing display in years, United swept Villa aside 4-1 with our goals coming from O’Connell, Duffy, Norwood and Sharp.

Villa manager Steve Bruce could only look on in admiration but – just over a month later - he was found out yet again. On 2 October 2018, Villa surrendered a two-goal lead, drawing 3–3 at home to bottom club Preston North End. One spectator threw a cabbage at Bruce and there were calls from home fans on the Holte End for Bruce to go. The following day, he was sacked by Villa after a poor run of form.

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham is just one away from becoming the first Villa player since Peter Withe to score 20 league goals in a single season after his brace v. Ipswich on Saturday 26th January ensured three crucial points against bottom-of-the-table Ipswich Town. These goals also meant that Abrahams became the first player since Pongo Waring in 1933 to score in seven consecutive home games for the club.

While not being an eye-catching goalscorer, John McGinn is a colossus at the heart of Villa’s midfield.

Bronze-medal diver (Mo Salah – Gold, Dele Alli - Silver), Jack Grealish has been out since early December 2018 with a shin injury. Missing since then - and having flown to Dubai with a club physio to benefit from the warmer climate - Villa manager Dean Smith has targeted the Blades game as a likely return.

With 24 goals from 67 Villa appearances, Jonathan Kodjia is an Ivory Coast international and Villa’s second-highest scorer.

​

Brought in on transfer deadline day on loan from Bournemouth, Tyrone Mings is a defender who Villa hope can improve their porous defence. Only two Championship teams have conceded more than the 46 goals that Smith's side have let in this season.

Mings was ‘investigated by the FA’ for what appeared to be a deliberate stamp on Readings’ Nélson Oliveira’s face during the 0-0 draw last Saturday (Feb. 2nd).

Current Villa manager – and ex-Sheffield Wednesday player – Dean Smith took over from the inept Steve Bruce on 10th October 2018, with John Terry as his assistant coach. Smith moved from Brentford after three solid years there.

I seem to remember us beating Villa 2-1 at the Lane around mid 70's. If my youthful memory serves me right Chico Hamilton nodded in the winner at the Kop end.......... think we still got relegated from Div. 1 that season ???

Like Villa Park as good traditional ground with a good atmosphere, but best I’ve seen us come away was two creditable draws , last seasons very sweet as it soon hushed a few of there gobshites near us Billy style .. wasn’t there for the FA Cup trip .
I see it’s likely that UK 10m springboard champion is likely to return , I really don’t get the lad as he obviously has talent but fuck me he goes down easier than lino , one of the highlights of that supreme performance at The Lane was Lunny hitting the driver in ankle socks with a proper tackle , what goes around comes around .
Tricky game but i’ll go 1-1

Cowans a class act for us , one of the best midfielders I’ve seen in a Blades shirt , Mortimer did well when he came , wasn’t all that keen on McNaught though & agree on Withe he stole wages at The Lane

On a similar point Roygbiv , did you ever read what the Villa fans thought of Steve Bruce moving to swillsborough? Sacked in October and hired in December by the Wendy? Can see this ending (hoping anyway) in a similar fashion to his previous outing

I spent some time talking to him at Wembley when we played Hull. He does still live in Sheffield, watches us but also does some matchday greeting work down at Villa.
