On the Undr The Cosh podcast most our former players other than I think Kilgallon all disliked Blackwell when they talked about him.

Not heard a decent word about him on there. Robbie Blake is the latest to label him as the worst manager he’s ever played for.

He also said of the 09 play off final that he knew they’d win before they even kicked off. Said he knew Blackwell was out of his depth and exactly how negatively he’d set up in big games.

We were total and complete shit that day and wouldn’t have scored if we were still playing now.

In fact didn’t Hendrie get sent off in the tunnel afterwards as well?

I read a piece about Hendrie yesterday and his battle with depression/suicide attempts which definitely cast him in a different light. What he says also tallies with what plenty of Blackwell’s former players say.

However what I don’t see in that article is any mention of Bryan Robson. Robson signed him, not Blackwell, and nearly relegated one of the best sides on paper ever assembled in the second tier. I’d have far more respect for him if he said he was seduced by playing for “Captain Marvel” only to find a washed up old soak massively out of his dep

Fans opinion of him was based on the woeful performances he turned in under Robson (bar one showing against QPR where he looked like a world beater).

Not sticking up for Blackwell here but while he may be a bit of a wanker and a footballing dinosaur he’s in far more credit than Robson. The club was an absolute circus when he took over.

I don't think we would have got relegated with him had he remained in charge but at the same time I don't think we would have got promoted either.

That said he didn't want to stay which means he knew he had gone as far as he could with the squad.

Let's be honest, a small midfielder is never going to flourish under Blackwell.

I used to work with someone who was on a night out in the Leadmill when some of Villa turned up. Lee Hendrie tried to chat her up and she said he was the most annoying person she'd ever met.

We were somewhat of a hoofball team under Colin.

Robson tried to change that. Right idea, wrong man !!! To an extent, Weir also falls in to that category. He tried to change the club, root and branch from its Northern Industrial Hob Nail Boots mentality. Again, good idea wrong man.

Blackwell had shit ideas, and has the man Management skills of Attila the Hun. Truly bobbar and I’d delight in telling him so .

Ironically, Wilder has brought some of the hob nail boot mentality back to the fore. Albeit with an entirely different and much more modern twist to it, and of course, spectacularly different outcomes .

He stopped Robson’s rot then created his own. He took a team that could have gone up automatically to the playoffs because he was negative and played scared football. He wasted a huge amount of money on shit signings, almost none of whom had any resale value. He was an appalling manager and an appalling leader. He left us with a team absolutely devoid of creativity, full of demotivated and disinterested players on big wages, far more than they were worth, which is why we were stuck with them.

'Scared football' is the right term.

When he took over from Robson in 07/08 he got us doing the basics again, made us hard to beat, working hard and getting the ball into the box early. It worked and we went on a decent run at the end of that season.

The next two seasons we were into the 'start with a point' type mentality that ends up with midfielders too afraid to take more than one touch that I never want to see us play again. Its never worked for us. It always backfired on Warnock when he tried it, and likewise for Clough.
