I don't understand the assumption that players dropping down the leagues will be on big money.

Surely the market drives the wages? Simon Cox's next contract will be for less money than his Reading contract, if only league one clubs are interested then he will surely be paid league one level wages?

That's true that he would likely take a pay cut to drop a division. The problem is saying "league 1 wages" as that is a very broad bracket. Some of the young players, and players plucked from lower division's will be a few hundred pounds a week whereas some of our players in recent years, some of Wolves' and Wigan''s players could have been earning upwards of £20k a week.

While Cox most likely wouldn't be the highest paid in the division I would imagine he'd ask for far more that some of the other suggestions that have been banded about.
