Okay the unabridged version
It is really a long and probably for most a bit odd or corney. (just remember you asked for it) I have always been drawn by my ancestry greek, scottish and Irish which sparked a fascination with Great Britain and Greece. When I was in like 6th or 7th grade my friends and I found the Beatles among others and that helped to increase the interest in Britain in general. (anglophiles I think I have heard it referred to as here)
Then when I was in 10th grade former prime minister John Majors came to visit Pittsburgh my home town which I love. He compared Pittsburgh to Sheffield and we also have a suburb called New Sheffield so that brought Sheffield into my view.
Sheffield has since become a sister City of Pittsburgh.
Anyway being from Pittsburgh I am a big sports fan. I follow all the teams, The Pittsburgh Steelers (American Football), The Pittsburgh Pirates (Baseball), The Pittsburgh Penguins (hockey) Pittsburgh Riverhounds (Semi-pro soccer and incidentaly the coach of my high school team coaches them but they have only been around really in the last few years))
Now throw in the Full Monty. (yes I know but I loved that movie and being from a steel town really related to a lot of it)
Now about 3 years ago now I was online with my friend who lives in Germany and the Superbowl (American football) was on so I started explaining to her about the game and she really started to understand it in return she got me hooked on England football. Her team is Manchester United (sorry) but I didn't really feel a pull to them. They didn't feel like my team.
So that is when I looked to Sheffield and the Blades. (I just couldn't root for someone called Wednseday)
I was sold after my first match the fans the team all felt right. I never go half way. I am a fan for life now. I was even able to go to a match at Bramall Lane last November when I made my first trip to Europe.
I am hoping to be able to again when I come back in Late September Early October.
I also like the fact that the Sheffield Ice Hockey team is called the Steelers. Only other team I know with that name.
I should also admit to liking a few of Sheffield's more famous sons. Def Leppard, Michael Palin and Sean Bean. (Lord of the Rings How I met my friend from Germany, but please don't hold that against me
)
Now aren't you sorry you asked?
