I thought it was going to be one of those threads of once great players who turned to shit for the Blades, I suppose it still can be :)

I give you Ian Rush for starters, i'm sure there's many more.............

Well he was a monumental pisshead at the arse end of his career by the time we had him. You can't really expect the Lisbon Lion of '67 to show up at this point.

The word 'great' is often overused but Jimmy Johnstone was a truly great player. Unfortunately we never saw his greatness. Think he spent a great deal of time in the Albion just before kick off.

Interesting to see in the video they weren't too bothered about colours clashing as Hibs and Celtic both allowed to play in green.

I can't think of a modern day player in this country that plays that way. Suppose there's Lennon at Everton. The art of dribbling seems to have died out.

He couldn't stand flying and there was a first leg European match at Parkhead. Jock Stein told him that if they won by four clear goals he wouldn't have to play in the second leg. Jinky went out and played the game of his life beating the opposition 5-1(?).

I think he joined us 'cos there was no danger of having to step on an aeroplane!

Silent Blade .
What were the teams when we played Fulham in 1976 at the Lane? Bert recalls Wee Jimmy, George Best, Bobby Moore and possibly even Rodney Marsh. Woody scoring in a 1-1 draw.

Hmm.. I don't think he meant for that phrasing, I'm pretty sure all he meant was to comment on the wording. He's going to claim it now though isn't he, so we shall never know.

Oh but we shall Barney Buttons Bon Bon.
The truth of the matter is that I meant not to post what wasn't going to something ever would've make sense.

Us
Brown
Franks
Garner
Flynn (Derek Hales broke his leg a week later at Charlton)
Colquhoun
Calvert
Woodward
Johnstone
Guthrie
Ludlam
Hamilton
sub McGeady

Dont have Fulham's line up but I remember Peter Mellor, Bobby Moore. John Evanson, John Mitchell (scored the equaliser) and Rodney Marsh played. I think John Cutbush, Les Strong, Alan Slough, Ernie Howe and Les Barratt played. Over to Sharrowblade

The pigs had Willie Henderson ,the council version of Jimmy Johnstone and the reason I always preferred Celtic to Rangers ,no religion ,no colour ,They had Henderson we had wee Jimmy.

Johnstone at his best was a much better player than Henderson at his best but Henderson was a much better player for Wednesday than Johnstone was for us. I went to Hillsborough a lot in the early-seventies - I used to go with a Wednesdayite who lived on the same street as me and he used to come to Bramall Lane to watch us - and Willie Henderson was good to watch and one of the better players, albeit in a deteriorating team. Johnstone on the other hand was generally poor for us and only showed a very occasional flash of what he could do.

Most impressive in the Crazy Daizy, always jinked and weaved on the way out.

By all accounts Jimmy Johnstone used to live in a big house on Springwood Lane, High Green and also used to be boozing in the Bridge on Hollow Gate.

I remember seeing Celtic vs Red Star Belgrade where the Slavs were targetting JJ. One tackle went in with 'purpose' and had the little bugger rolling about in some pain.

Dirty twats.

pommpey

Jimmy J was one of the biggest disappointments of player acquisitions for me - lion of lisbon my arse. The only weaving he did for us on the pitch was the after effects of the previous nights drinking. Came for a pay day. One of the many.

Yeah that wouldn't happen now would it? Oh.

I often stood next to him at Mass at St Mary's at Mortomley.

He was tiny , but was obviously some player to be voted Celtic's greatest.
