In answer to the OP...as a striker, yes, I sincerely hope so. I hope we never play him as a striker again - unless it was an absolute necessity because of injuries to others. As a midfielder, no. I think he has something to offer in a midfield role, but he will need to compete with the likes of Lafferty, who I don't rate either.
You can trawl back months on here to the start of the season and I pointed out then that Done isn't a striker. He's played all his career as a midfielder, except for one season. I pointed out that with the exception of that one season, his usually goal tally for a season is 6. And I pointed out that to rely on someone who only averages 6 goals a season, to fire you to promotion, is utter madness. But, few agreed with this because most couldn't see past the fact that he runs around like a greyhound with his arse on fire. (I even suggested he would lose his place to Lavery when Lavery got fit and that we would be grateful for it - Nostradamis I am not btw - football fan - I am).
Now the penny has dropped for a few more. I'm glad. Not because I've anything against anyone on here, or against Matty Done, but I care for my club and I don't want to see us fuck up another season through relying on a bloke to score us goals who has no past track record as a striker. I'm grateful to Sky Sports for showing a very telling stat - "Matt Done - 2 goals in 41 appearances". That one stat alone has changed a few opinions I think. Although the stat was always there - but some didn't want to look for it, or face up to it, before now.
It's not just the sitters he's missed, of which there have been maybe half a dozen in the last half a dozen games he's played - but it's the fact he's not making the tap ins, in and around the 6 yard box, when the ball is being whipped across that area. He's there on the spot, most of the time, but he's not anticipating the ball coming across - because...he isn't a striker. Simple as that. There's no "striker instinct" in the man. Get him back into midfield or leave him off the field altogether. But do not waste one of two key striker slots on him.
Young Lavery showed us what we are missing when he came on the other night. Speed, quick feet, trickery but most of all, an idea where the bloody goals are and an attempt to shoot the ball at them. He also won the header which made the winner for Billy. If Done had stayed on the pitch we would not have been leaving there the other night with 3 points - fact.
