Have we just seen Done start his last game for us ?

I'm obviously not in the best position to judge, but every time iv seen done iv not been impressed. Obviously he must play better in other games but we really need a better goal threat alongside billy. I dont agree with the whole don't change a winning team thing, a winning team can be improved. Lavery looked good, however it's the first time i have seen him play.

Maybe Done is just trying too hard we know he can score goals at this level, could be time to give him a rest. I'm sure when one goes in off his arse he will start scoring again.

Coutts was gash tonight, is that his last start as well?

indeed, I saw that stat as well. shocking for a striker, despite his honest hard work
but when he plays this season we win.

ultimately, its a results game, I'm currently happy with 60 minutes of Done, Lavery is starting to look like the player to bring on

I have been critical of him this season mainly because of his very poor goal return but I do appreciate his application. He is not a natural forward, gets caught offside way too much and makes bad decisions. I hope its not his last game though for the simple reason that the stats show that when he starts we gain more points than when Billy has a different partner.
If we are going to finally escape from this league then we need a pacy striker who can score on a regular basis. I'm quite content to let Mr Wilder do what's best.

Just think of Done as a forward and not a striker. His role has been vital to where we are now even if some refuse to see it.
As a forward, it makes his goals tally sound less of a problem than a non scoring striker.

2 goals in 41 starts from Done I think they said on Sky

Even though he's hardly banging them in at the minute, that stat is a bit misleading. That includes all the times Adkins played him out of position.

We won yesterday but he was off the pitch at 1-1.

I agree that its a results business, I just think we need to mix it up a bit more than always playing Done and Sharp from the start.

We did that. We drew with Charlton and lost to Walsall and Bolton, didn't we?

Lavery did well, but the team's performance dropped massively when Done went off.

I've nothing against Done, I'll accept any team Wilder and Knill wish to put out. However Lavery created space for himself on two occasions and hit the post, he was involved in creating the chance for Billy's winner. The game would have ended in a draw if Done had remained.

Pleased Billy won MOM but overall their keeper would have been a worthy winner. Thought OConnell had a good game but disappointed with the rest. A player that causes me concern is EEL. Their goal scorer slipped past him far too easily.

I realise there are many who have put him in the Hagan, Joe Shaw, TC, Brian Deane legendary status but I believe if we sign him then he won't be up to Championship standard and will soon become next season's scapegoat.

But I'll continue to trust Wilder's judgement.

One reason for Done's lack of goals this season could be fatigue after all the running, pressing and chasing he does.

From a study:

Purpose: This study examined the effects of exercise-induced fatigue on soccer skills performed throughout simulated match play. Methods: Fifteen academy soccer players completed a soccer match simulation (SMS) including passing, dribbling, and shooting skills. Precision, success rate, and ball speed were determined via video analysis for all skills. Blood samples were obtained before exercise (preexercise), every 15 min during the simulation (15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 min), and 10 min into half-time.

Results
: Preliminary testing confirmed testretest repeatability of performance, physiological, and metabolic responses to 45 min of the SMS. Exercise influenced shooting precision (timing effect: P = .035) and passing speed (timing effect: P = .011), such that shots taken after exercise were 25.5 ± 4.0% less accurate than those taken before exercise and passes in the last 15 min were 7.8 ± 4.3% slower than in the first 15 min. Shot and pass speeds were slower during the second half compared with the first half (shooting: 17.3 ± 0.3 m∙s–1 vs 16.6 ± 0.3 m∙s–1, P = 0.012; passing: 13.0 ± 0.5 m∙s–1 vs 12.2 ± 0.5 m∙s–1, P = 0.039). Dribbling performance was unaffected by exercise. Blood lactate concentrations were elevated above preexercise values throughout exercise (time of sample effect: P < .001).

Conclusions
: These findings demonstrate that soccer-specific exercise influenced the quality of performance in gross motor skills, such as passing and shooting. Therefore, interventions to maintain skilled performance during the second half of soccer match play are warranted.

Although this study focused on declining performances late in games, it seems natural to apply to Done running very fast more often than other players.

I think Wilder appreciates his work rate, while obviously wanting him to take more of his chances. But what would happen if he started to conserve more energy for the chances he gets? He may convert more chances, but will our pressing then also become less effective?

Lavery is clearly getting sharper and Wilder gave him half an hour quite rightly, in which he did well and i'm sure he will continue to get this amount of time - with Clarke used as an last 10 min sub if needs be

But .. the fact is we are scoring so many goals and winning games with Done and Billy starting together

sorry but to look at it as 'he hasnt scored so must be dropped' is ridiculous and not looking at the whole picture- that being of the team scoring goals and winning games !!!

he was buzzing round the box and next to the man that cleared the ball straight to Billy for the 1st last night - he must be a nightmare to play against as a defender as he is constantly moving

he is essential to our team and i couldnt care less if he doesnt score again this season, if the form /scoring continues from Biully and Co...

Great post. I suspect this is why it's difficult to sign strikers who run around a lot and also score goals. Particularly at L1/2 level. I remember Billy running around for Beattie and he barely scored, but when playing as the main man in the box for Donny Rovers, he was quite prolific.

Rather see Done in starting 11, he's going nowhere, paid a lot of cash for him so he will be there when we go up as Champions 2 goals in 60 games but who cares ⚽

Yes, think of him as a critical and effective part of a successful strike force in the team/squad. Not as a striker

Fair enough yep. I like Done on the whole, he works his arse off and is very unselfish, I just remember him scoring more for Rochdale, and more for us when he first started, and think we could get more goals from him.

This whole Done episode is becoming tedious now. If he/ Utd don't play well he's under the spotlight instantly with some on here. Nobody is saying he's the long term answer but let's give the fella a brake. As Wilder says he needs one off his shin or backside to get him going, a little bit like Laverys scuff last Saturday. Same again for me Boxing Day. Let Matty wear them down allowing the likes of Lavery to shine against a tired defence. Let's hope he gets a rub of the green too
