Personally if we avoid defeat on 26th and win games in hand if we dont go up we've fucked something up.

There for the taking now!!

I'd be inclined to say hold your horses here... We have 8 games in March, so its coming thick and fast.

Thankfully though, we seem well placed at the moment, but I think we need more breathing space, so wins v Preston and not losing v the Pigs will put us in a much stronger position.

March is a heavy month and whilst the games are all winnable, we can easily slip up as there isn't too much recovery time between games so knocks and injuries might start to figure.

We need a centrehalf on loan...

We could be out of sight by mid march, but then again we could also be dragged back into the Play Off dog fight. Which with MK Dons and Stevenage in April, we need to be out of sight.

One foot in is no good, we need both in

Centre half on loan - I presume as back up? That's where Big Davie Weir comes in; he's still training with us as far as I know.

And you've got to be careful putting both feet in, tends to lead to red cards these days :D

Yeah, Weir would be a good back up, I understand he can still do a job. But we need to either get him in or get someone else in

I wouldn't think he'd sign for us if he's just back up though, he apparently left Rangers because he wanted to extend his playing career... perhaps it was money reasons though

I image if Collins or Maguire became injured Weir would be signed in an instant.

Long way to go yet but if we come out of the derby un-scathed then we've gotta be putting our other foot forward!

P.S. Charlton are gonna wobble soon!

fuck it...i'll say it.AUTOMATIC promotion.the new blades way!!!

Money reasons from the Rangers perspective, no doubt.
David Weir could play a part for us this season in case one of NC and HM should get injured.
Looks to me that Danny is doing all the shrewd bit of management on a shrew string budget

On the subject of injuries, could we cope if McDonald got injured? He's one of our key players at the min. Could Williamson/Quinn move inside to cover for him without having a detrimental effect on the team?

If Williamson's head is right and he's fit then I'd say yes, not so sure about Quinn.

Without a doubt, the team would be affected if Macca got injured. But the same could be said for the entire spine

Simmo - Collins - Doyle - Macca - Ched

Certainly wouldn't use Quinn in the middle, don't rate him there. So its Willo.

That said, we have a very solid team at this level, so I would hope that the style of play would remain, we just lose a ball playing option and it would mean that the wingers and fullbacks would have to step up more.

How time's have changed

I'd say one foot hovering tentatively above automatic. Based upon the great "10 points from safety" debacle of 2007.

ten wins.. eight games at home.. keep the faith :)

We haven't had Trevor Kettle at the Lane yet this season though. That's one game where his dozen or so bizarre decisions can render the game no more than a lottery whether you're playing Barcelona or Barnet. Sadly this is the one season his barmyness could work against us.

We turned around wendy's 4 point lead into a 2 point deficit in a matter of 10 days

With a whopping 51 points to play for, I think it would be madness to start thinking that a victory over Huddersfield means we are going up.

Unfortunately, were we are concerned, it doesn't work like that.

Long, long, way to go.

Heads down, one game at a time and just focus on the next 3 points and then what will be will be

Au contraire, it does work like that. The only seasons in my lifettme when we have had 59 points or more after 29 games were in 81-82 (when we had 59) and 05-06 (when we had 65 points). We, of course, went up both times.

In a word, no.

If we win our game(s) in hand, then we're in a very good position. We still have to go and actually compete in all those hundreds of minutes of football which remain and score goals, defend well and keep clean sheets, stay as injury and suspension free as possible - get results- not to mention avoiding bad refereeing decisions along the way.

The key thing here is confidence, we have it in abudance after the huddersfield win, which is great and is a weapon in itself. Had we got a point or lost we'd not be in too dissimilar position to where we are now, so i don't think this one result changes enough to stay we're going up ...yet.

Ask me after the derby and the surrounding games and you may just get a different answer B)

Good stats Darren. However, as I am a glass half empty supporter, followed by someone who hates tempting fate, I'll stick with my original theory.

I for one will refuse to discuss whether we are already one foot in the championship until we have both feet planted in there

That way I wont get too disappointed if it doesn't happen (honest), I wont be seen to be acting arrogant unlike some fans over the other side of the city and it wont be an anti-climax, if by some quirk of fate we manage to achieve our goal

We have to be careful we dont pick up any bad injuries as we are short of cover at the back and would struggle to find a replacement for K Mac in centre mid from our existing squad. I expect there is always the emergency loan window in which to find suitable replacements.

We really have to avoid defeat at the Theatre of Rust and hope Huddersfields new manager doesnt make a huge difference to their form and turn draws into wins.

I understand your mentality and sympthathise with it! However, logic tells one that if a club is, after about 2/3 of the season, averaging more than 2 points a game than that is because it is much better than most of the rest of its division. It follows that barring some catastrophic set of injuries one can confidently expect that that club will continue to beat most teams it faces.

So cautious optimism is the word!

We're going about this all wrong. This is Sheffield United chaps, and we should know better than this. What we should be asking ourselves is: if we have one foot in the automatic spots, what's the other foot standing in?

Just wait until Chezzy take some points off the Pigs on Sat-di. Huddersfield not playing until a week on Sat-di. Get a win and suddenly we are looking at putting distance between us and the rest.

Truth is that it is one step at a time. However I think Wilson will keep them focused. Consistency is the key. But a win t-morra and a result at the Sty and we're looking great. The games will come thick and fast in March, but they are all winnable. Big chance for us. Keeping our feet on the ground is essential,, but why not put a bit of pressure on Charlton??! ;)

I think you have a point, and i am cautiously optimistic...but my worry is that we could beat most teams we face and still come third by a close margin, as long as we're within a couple of gamesmargin of error so to speak.

When we're securely 6+ pts ahead, ie no games in hand for anyone, then i'll be confident. So, looking at the table, basically if we win our games in hand.

Big chance ahead with the next 4 games all in Sheffield, won't get travel weary.
History says from where we are now we have always gone up ,either under e points a game or if you go back and change the old 2 point to 3 and follow it through

I'd agree with that. Among the euphoria of Tuesday night, we've got to play waaay better against Preston than we did last Saturday. First shot on target was our first goal - about 70 minutes.

One step at a time.
