Have any away fans ever celebrated on our pitch?

Am I right in thinking that result meant there was a chance of pigs going down too or at least making it a possibility going into the last game?

I vaguely recall that the Pigs did have a mathematical chance of going down that day instead of Barnsley (or Walsall) but it needed them to get a serious hiding in their game to make a difference in goal difference. It truth it was never gunna happen and they were to all intents safe before that last match. However our lovable cousin Kes and his Kestrel friend up the road were in serious danger if going down provided Walsall won their game. Knowing just how much our six fingered banjo twangers up the road love us, we reciprocated those feelings by being gutted at their relegation by watching our team meekly roll over and then going out afterwards to have a few drinks to get over it..... (all whilst grinning from ear to ear).

Remember them celebrating at the Lane when we played them last match of the season (and were already down in all but name) when we got relegated in 2011? They've never liked us. The feelings mutual.

Indeed. I was in the John Street Stand - in line with the 18 yard line - for the Walsall match and can still recall the sight of United fans starting to climb the fencing at the front of the Kop after Walsall scored their penalty.

12 months later, we were in the same seats for the Peterborough match, and Blades on the Kop were climbing the fences again and were several deep around the touch line as the final whistle approached…

The fourth division campaign and the game and celebrations at the Peterborough game more than made up for the previous seasons misery and it allowed the club to have a reset. In hindsight I was glad we got relegated that awful day back in 81. Still it was a feckin bleak day all round that one, from watching those useless fuckwits half heartedly playing for us, Martin Peters who was fucking hopeless as a manager dropping one if the few (Kenworthy) who played like he gave a fuck ( and who would have buried that last minute penalty) and then the fighting afterwards in and outside the ground as some United fans turned nasty. Wasnt a nice day. For some reason which I cannot fathom bearing in mind the ups and downs since, I still see the date of 2 May and on that day at about quarter to five i still shudder with the memory and shake my head in disgust. Still it was character building if nothing else as a young lad.

Going back to that Walsall game circa 2002, one of our youth teams paraded a trophy and did a lap of honour at half-time. They were applauded as they walked past the away end, prompting Gary Sinclair to say "Thank you to the Walsall fans for applauding. Very sporting of you." A bloke near me said "Well we applauded their goal. The least they can do is applaud our kids!"

I'm glad I wasn't around in 1981. Seems like that match gave a lot of fans some long-term trauma!
Me and my best mate just sat on the kop with tears rolling down our faces ,but it gave us one of our best seasons straight after
We managed 40 out of 46 games that season

I was a bit strange on the kop that day. Most of us were actually wanting Walsall to win and there was a bit of a cheer on the kop when they scored against us. I don't think we deliberately tried to lose the game but the winner for them was hardly out of the blue and I don't think United got in gear that day never mind got out of 2nd gear. I remember getting a green un and looking at the table and then going in the pub (sportsman) and there were a lot of happy Blades fans around considering we had just lost at home. It was a bit of a gimme in all honesty. Still never mind....i laughed my arse off that night at the dingles misery.
Was gus uhlunbeek (spelling) playing for them that day , if so my pal on the pitch and got his shirt

Walsall fans celebrated on the pitch after a 0-1 win virtually ensured their survival in the old Nationwide Division One in April 2002.

It was also our last home fixture so the home fans (myself included) did the old running on the pitch at the end of the season thing as well.

It was good natured, both sets of fans applauded each other, no bollocks in the papers about "Disgraceful scenes". It was nice.

I remember that, from my seat on the Kop it looked like our fans rushed theirs, only to stop short and start applauding as they got close.

I'm surprised Leeds didn't celebrate on the pitch in 1992. Were they in the upper tier on Bramall Lane?

Many were too busy dismantling seats.

It just goes to show that football fans are all mouth and nowt else

Perfect opportunity for them but they didn't take it because they knew it would have created mayhem for them

Better to stand behind a line of coppers and throw missiles, then brag about how you sorted that bunch of Sheffield twats out.

Same with Derby County mid 80's, won the League at Bramall Lane, both tiers full of them, and after winning the League they had a couple of choruses of "We love you Derby, we do"

And then they all went home

I did 42 out of 46 but the big regret was having to miss Peterborough away. Think it was midweek but I can't remember why I missed it, was their biggest gate for years

I know we missed Bradford, Bournemouth and Scunthorpe can't remember the others
Over riding memory 30 a side on Blackpool beach and having a lively discussion 😱😱😱 with some Millwall fans in London on the away game at Aldershot

Tuesday night. That game is one of my stand out games while following the Blades. At least 7000 Blades turned up that night.

Guuuuuuss Uhlenbeek played for them, on loan from us, that day.

They were on the kop that day over to the right hand side.
There was around 150-200 of them.
They had no colours on but they made them selfs known.
I was stood right behind them with my 3 lads.

Who were the four teams that United didn't beat home or away in that fourth division season ? clue only 1 team actually beat United in any of those 8 games though (i e. they took 4 points off us that season which was more than any other club did).

I missed only 1 Saturday match that season - Aldershot away.

Hull.. took 4 points. Hereford, Bournemouth & Bury

Spot on. Lost at Hull with a late winner from Edwards for them resulting in a bit of bother on the pitch between the fans (I think we bought him the week after), Hereford at home was first match of the season and we were 2 up early doors and chucked it away, Bournemouth away was a goalless draw with the TV cameras there (there is footage of the game on the internet and Edwards almost nicked it for us late on). Buggered if I can remember the other five matches though and I would have been at most of em.

In my top few away days this one.

Thousands all stood up, pay on the gate as I remember, warm night, absolutely electric.

Bournemouth at home was televised, the away game down there that was televised was the 0-0 draw early 1982:83.

Colchester gave us a good hiding away.

Bearing in mind I would have been at the away match at Bournemouth for the division 4 season (as I hardly missed a game home or away that season), and then I remember being there for the game that was on the TV the following season, then that means I went all the way down to Bournemouth for two seasons running and didn't even see a goal for either team. Always the entertainers.

Yep I remember that game (we wore Colchester's away shirt that day). I was stood on the terrace behind the goal to the left of the TV cameras ( the goal where Edwards scored a consolation for us in the second half) and that was split between home and away fans. I remember Edwards scoring and a right melee kicking off to our right as I think the United naughty boys started the trouble in the home end. It went on for a while as the match just carried on. Different times (thankfully).

Yeah me too 😂. The 4th division away game was a fortnight after Torquay away, Nov 28th. Three games on the trot finished 0-0, the 4th game against them was also a draw 2-2.

The official attendance(genuinely)was 16,001 and I wish it had been 16,000.

Proper grim.

16k? Bloody hell. Hard to imagine now, especially when it's a relegation decider.

Mind you, our attendances have historically fluctuated quite significantly. My first season as a season ticket holder was 1999/00 and the average gate that year was 13,718. That was in the second tier as well. The same season that we drew 8,965 at home to Port Vale.
