Have any away fans ever celebrated on our pitch?

I mean in the Darlington,Leicester or Northampton type celebration

Walsall fans celebrated on the pitch after a 0-1 win virtually ensured their survival in the old Nationwide Division One in April 2002.

It was also our last home fixture so the home fans (myself included) did the old running on the pitch at the end of the season thing as well.

It was good natured, both sets of fans applauded each other, no bollocks in the papers about "Disgraceful scenes". It was nice.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They didn't do it in 1981

Most I think I've ever seen was Birmingham back in 75 or 76 last game of the season. We were already relegated after a disastrous season. Birmingham and Wolves were both fighting to stay up on the same night. Wolves were playing Liverpool. Birmingham got to stay up in front of a packed Lane end. A lot came on the pitch at final whistle but stayed up their end.

In fact, a lot of Unitedites wanted Walsall to win because it sent Barnsley down. I remember a furious Barnsley fan calling Praise Or Grumble afterwards and saying that we'd lost deliberately, added proof being the fact that "they call us the Dingles, yer know!" Whoever was presenting the show said, "You can't hold Sheffield United responsible for Barnsley's shortcomings over the whole season".

1976. 1-1. United fans went on the pitch as well. Just as things looked like they might get tasty, they switched the floodlights off. Surreal.

I do remember that now you mention it! I remember coming home in my mates dad's car and P&G was on the radio. The Dingles' saltiness levels were off the scale that day.

I was a bit strange on the kop that day. Most of us were actually wanting Walsall to win and there was a bit of a cheer on the kop when they scored against us. I don't think we deliberately tried to lose the game but the winner for them was hardly out of the blue and I don't think United got in gear that day never mind got out of 2nd gear. I remember getting a green un and looking at the table and then going in the pub (sportsman) and there were a lot of happy Blades fans around considering we had just lost at home. It was a bit of a gimme in all honesty. Still never mind....i laughed my arse off that night at the dingles misery.

Hang on - I've got a completely different game in mind - apologies, I saw Walsall and lost my head

Are you sure about that?

My recolection of the end of that game was watching United fans run on the pitch and attack some Walsall players. In fact I'm sure that this lead to fences being erected for the start of the next season in some stands

A far as I can recall, everybody was in good spirits, but quite orderly, I don't remember seeing any aggro. I could be wrong of course.

I remember that. We had nowt to play for, they brought a lot and were deliriously happy at the end. I remember congratulating their fans outside the ground, no kidney punches, a lot of goodwill. You're right Woolford, it was nice.

This photo was taken after the tannoy announcement was made that Swindon had lost at home to Brentford - a result that would have kept us up - in an attempt to stop the Blades fans being naughty on the pitch…

I remember it well
Me and my mate (RIP)

Stood watching from behind the fence, half sad and half disgusted at how bad we'd become, absolutely no intention of going on the pitch to show any fanatism to that bunch of twats.

Then the Swindon (lie) score came over the tannoy

It didn't have the effect that the police and the club wanted.

What was a 500 strong pitch invasion became a 5000 strong pitch invasion which then turned very nasty when the truth came through

Am I right in thinking that result meant there was a chance of pigs going down too or at least making it a possibility going into the last game?

If it had been true, it would have denied us one of the best and most memorable seasons in the Blades history. In an alternative universe somewhere, Swindon did lose to Brentford and we did stay up. However, a year later, our last match of the following season was a tepid 0-0 home draw against Torquay, in front of just under 6,000, to keep us in 12th place in the third division, and the tale of us taking 10,000 to Darlington to celebrate the fourth division championship was just the inane ramblings of a madman's dream.

Indeed. I was in the John Street Stand - in line with the 18 yard line - for the Walsall match and can still recall the sight of United fans starting to climb the fencing at the front of the Kop after Walsall scored their penalty.

12 months later, we were in the same seats for the Peterborough match, and Blades on the Kop were climbing the fences again and were several deep around the touch line as the final whistle approached…
