Fuckin up on such a massive scale? Just wondering, as various Blades have voiced fears of "only SUFC could fuck this up now.." As a points lead as big as ten, with only 8 games left ever gone tits up? I seem to recall Newcastle throwing away a (7 or 8 points ) lead over Manure, and of course our majestic failure to the Filth in 2012, Can anyone recall a bigger fuck up than the one we have in front of us?

In recent memory the huge lead that Tranmere gave away springs to mind - but they gave it away gradually over a period of 15 or so games didn't they?

On 9th March 2002, Wolves had 78 points from 39 games, were top of Division One, 1pt ahead of Manchester City and 11 ahead of WBA. Wolves' goal difference was +35, WBA's +19. WBA had played 38 games though, so had 1 in hand on Wolves.

On the last day of the season, the final table was:

1. Man City, 99 pts, +56
2. WBA, 89 pts, +32
3. Wolves 86pts, +33

WBA had done a 14 point turnaround, and clawed the goal difference back to almost bang level. Wolves took 8 points from their last 7 games, WBA took 19 from theirs.

Newcastle being caught by the red side of Manchester. Can't put them and "United" in the same sentence but you know who I mean.

Weren't Scunthorpe well clear a few months ago

Look like losing a play off place altogether now

We were also 10 points clear of relegation from the Premier League quite late on in that season

Not sure that adds up mate.....

Man City....77 points with 7 games left....can't finish on 99.
I'm feeling particularly pedantic today. :D

Panic

I think we have cracked it this season though

It's just the totally unbelievable series of events that would have to take place over the next few games that makes it so well set up for Sheffield United to fail

If we win three out of the last eight a team below Bolton would have to win Practically every game to overtake us.
That is what makes it believable in the world of Sheffield United

Three wins and we've done it

Three wins and we've done it

This is the exciting reality.

Games are running out so fast and our rivals aren't consistantly winning games.

3, Maybe 4 more victories would guarantee it.

Ah, but Manchester City had played 37, therefore they had 9 left. I didn't actually mention how many games Man City had played. I felt it irrelevant because WBA overtaking Wolves and the 14 point turnaround was the monumental fuck up rather than Man City winning the title from being 1 point behind Wolves.

15 points to be won - or lost by Fleetwood - for promotion.

19 points to be won - or lost by Bolton - for the title.

In terms of promotion, Fleetwood are 10 points behind with 8 games to go. Teams that get promoted get around 2 points per game so they should get somewhere round 16 points. By that reckoning, 3 wins will be enough.

In terms of the title, Bolton are 9 points behind with a game in hand, they have 9 games to go. Using 2 points per game, they should get another 18 points approximately. By that reckoning, 4 wins should do it.

If we get 5 wins out of our last 8, it will be MORE than enough.

7 wins and a draw = 100 points though. That would be nice.

No one seems to want to take 6th spot including the grunters themselves
They have had a reprieve this weekend I'd be surprised if they let it slip now

Norwich might have just timed their change right and it would be quite funny if Irvine stopped the pigs getting 6th place. Norwich are only 5 points off the pigs, which when you consider people expect us to chuck away a 10 point lead is more achievable!

Yeah I thought that but I'd convinced myself they were gonna be out the top 6 by now and I'm fucking passed off Fulham have bottled it after putting in such a good run to get on the verge of overhauling them

Even if we blow it ourselves, it still needs two teams to have very very good runs, but nobody has looked likely to do it. It's possible that we could miss out on the title to Bolton if they win every game to the end of the season, but not going up at all seems very unlikely unless we don't win a single game.

Here's a list of the maximum points possible for each team (with the wins needed just to pass United's current points total in brackets)
Sheff Utd 102
Bolton 96 (3 of 9, plus need to improve goal difference)
Fleetwood 92 (4 of 8)
Bradford 87 (4 of 7, plus GD)
Scunthorpe 85 (5 of 7)
Southend 84 (6 of 8, plus GD)
Millwall 89 (7 of 10)
Bristol R 78 (7 of 7, plus GD)
Oxford 82 (8 of 9)
Rochdale 83 (9 of 10)
Everyone below 10th is already too far behind to catch us.

Some of those are unlikely to even make it past the 78 we already have and apart from Bolton and Fleetwood, none of them will have many matches left if they do. Even in the impossible event of them all winning every game, five wins guarantees promotion, four wins would need Fleetwood to win every game to beat us, three wins and a couple of draws should be plenty in real terms, and even just two wins and a few draws might be enough. If we can't even win more than one of our last 8 then something is seriously wrong.

Interesting responses guys. I feel more relaxed and confident having digested those viewpoints.

bollocks to drawing

I've been waiting for us to fuck it up since Christmas, and we haven't yet. I thought that if we lost to Charlton things could get a bit jittery but now that's been put to bed I'm firmly in the "definitely going up" camp

If we blow it from this position, it will top all our previous fuck ups, including the improbable relegations in 81, 94? and 07, by miles and I may not return to the Lane for many, many months. But it's not going to happen.

I'd still take 2nd now though

Our magic number of points for promotion on Saturday morning was 20 from 9 games.

As we won and Fleetwood drew, it's now 15 from 8 games - so we are a lot nearer the finish line and we and Fleetwood only played once.

This shows that Fleetwood have very little margin for error - and those below them have no margin for error at all.

Plus when I worry about a collapse I think to myself -

- we have been the best team in the division so far this season. The table proves it.

- we are the best team in the division form wise. The form table proves it.

- we have the best manager. I don't think he will allow us to screw up.
