One of my favourite players, the story of when he went to play in Italy and before his debut, the opposition hard man was spouting off what he was going to do to Souness,5 minutes into the game the hard man was being carried off on a stretcher
As I wrote Fred, Souness knew how to intimidate, and did so with a level of nous and sometimes thuggery that I sometimes viewed his approach to the game with disdain. But the compensation was the way he could take a hold of the midfield, make reasonable players turn into good, sometimes great, players, and he made Liverpool a winning team that won the lot! I recalled Alan Hansen commenting, half jokingly, that he was pleased the day Souness left Liverpool as it finally allowed him the chance to actually take the ball out of defence rather than have Souness demand it and leave Hansen and Lawrenson (a superb player in his own right) to look on as Souness worked his magic as Liverpool attacked.
