Harry called up for England

Not quite; Harry benefitted from staying with us and learning his trade before going to a higher placed club. Young players can trust us to develop them properly (and be inspired by him) which gives us a great chance to sign the best young prospects in the area and maybe keep them a little longer if they turn out to be decent.

Always say this in relation to brooks but the players that have gone on to do well are primarily the ones that actually played regularly at an young ages.

Harry, Lawton, naughton, walker - all had regular 40+ games of competitive football at around the same age.

Much more beneficial to their development than going and sitting in the pl reserves and getting 2 efl cup appearances in 3 seasons and some half baked loan moves

We should play that card with brooks when the big boys come calling. Short term sensible to get the benefits on a huge contract long term rather than an extra few k a week now and fading into obscurity ala Slew / that guy that went to Chelsea

Happy for Harry but have to say that's an incredibly average squad.

England will never win a major tournament again.

I don't understand. He's so slow and easily replaceable. We got a great deal for leadboots

It was a fantastic deal at the time.
He was in his final year and had simply outgrown league 1.

The bottom line is 'A league 1 club can never compete financially with a PL club".
He's ambitious and served the club well but he needed to get out of league 1 to help his progress.

The acknowledgement before the game started -fair enough but then most of the fans gave him a standing ovation as he left the pitch too, bunch of knobs.
Once you've said GLTTL he's the fucking enemy when he turns up, I'm not going to call him what the bloke to my left did but I'm not clapping the twat off the pitch either. He's had his last clap off me unless he does something favourable for the Blades (or England).
If that's not tongue-in-cheek, then you've made yourself sound a twat!
What hurt you so much about clapping an once Blades player OFF the pitch?

I don't know about that, any squad with the Dancing Twat Jesse Lingard in it is good enough for me.

I think Brooks knows this, having been at City's academy, which is why he's willing to stay if he's getting games. And it suits both parties if he plays.

For every DCL, there's five Slews, Ironsides etc and I'm sure we make the kids very aware of this.

Appreciated his acknowledgement of us the other night and wish him good things for the future, but nothing he does from now on will have any bearing on Sheffield United, so it doesn't really matter.

Sounds remarkably Pinchyesque just replacing Jags with Harry !

:)

Can't say with absolute certainty but that's what I've heard.

Was gona call bollocks on that... but if the pigs are able to have 3/4 strikers all on 40 grand a week, no reason he wouldn't be on double that. Games gone crazy though, Leicester have 1 unbelievable season then they are able to had out close to £100,000 a week in wages.

Well done to the lad, and not before time.

Doesn't anybody else find it a bit odd that he gets his call up ONLY after he left Hull?
After all he was excellent for Hull last season too, and certainly did as much as others who got a chance.

All seems a little sus to me

Except I don't entertain bullshit conspiracy theories about handballs or cry about the fact that he hasn't written us a weekly love letter since he left.

But that's none of my business of course :)

Fantastic achievement for Harry Maguire, Leicester got a great deal , suspect it's only a stepping stone to one of the bigger clubs in the prem, top bloke made up for him!

Was it the 'he's had his last clap off me' bit that made you suspicious? Who's the twat now?
What's the matter with people these days? Can't even see a very obvious (helped you out there) set up.

Fucking hell, I'm confused. Have you given him the clap or not?

I know you've already had a response from BushBlade, who talked about the example Maguire has set, and the positive effect it could have in keeping our youngsters for longer.

IMO It's also pointing out that large transfer fees and England call ups for our academy graduates could result in the following:
  • The value of our young players increases (Southampton are an obvious example)
  • It's easier to recruit players to the academy - parents would sooner send their kids to an academy with a 'track record'
  • It incentives the club to include clauses in the contract for future deals.
I also find England hard to get behind despite being English and loving football: in my experience it's a lot less boring with a ex blades on the pitch.

Yeah alright then. Keep telling yourself that if it helps

It was a fantastic deal at the time.

It turned out it wasn't at all though.
As I said in the 50 page thread at the time, it will ONLY turn out to be a good deal/good business if we strengthen the squad and get promoted THAT season. We didn't and didn't! In fact it took three managers and seasons to get back and the sale of even more notables in the interim.

That's what I find strange about anyone querying the DCL deal. We didn't weaken the team (at the time), we used the funds to get players in that would play week in, week out, and we got promoted. Now THAT is a good deal!

Next stop Barca for the English Pique? Was clear he was England bound after his first full season in a Blades shirt.Strangely a lot of Blades and the pigs doubted his ability He seems like a top lad.

Great news, not bad for "lead boots" is it?

Totally agree. I could tell straight away that he would play for England, providing he stayed fit and didn't get any bad luck. Same with Walker and now Brooks.

Average ?? Kane, Rashford,Alli ? If england played all the english spurs players and just added in the rest we would be in with a great shout at tournement.

No chance. Bar a couple no English player would get in any of the top club or international sides in the world.

Vastly over-rated and over-paid players made to look better than they are being surrounded by better foreign imports in their club sides.

He didn't want to join Spurs because his partner had just started a new job in Sheffield and he didn't want to move so far away.

Exactly.

Just like with Walker, for people who have watched a lot of football, it was apparent straight away that Maguire had attributes that set him apart from the majority of youngsters that come through - the sort of attributes that enable a player to go to the highest levels. It invariably doesn't matter what level they are actually playing at at the time, but when you've seen lots of football it stands out like a sore thumb; you just know when you see it.

Maguire was at home in the Championship as soon as he came in to the side in what is a hard position for a youngster to play. Similarly, it was obvious immediately that Walker clearly had the added strength and athleticism that made him a cut above Naughton, regardless of how well Naughton had done all season in 30 odd games. And, irrespective of the fact that it was against Orient, it was blindingly obvious when Brooks came on in the FA Cup tie last season that he is a player with the x-factor; the confidence to try outrageous bits of skill straight away.

Often, and it seems to be a curiously Sheffield trait, however, we are guilty of under-rating our own players who we see all the time - thus seeing the things that don't come off or the games when somebody is below par - whilst over-rating other club's players who we only see in highlights. It's happening right now with Brooks. Is it any wonder that our Board under-value these players when many of the fans are guilty of talking down the abilities of our players?

Maguire has his England call-up which, as the great TC has said, was always on the cards. Funnily enough, though, it comes immediately after what I thought was one of the more unimpressive performances that I've ever seen Maguire have, on Tuesday. More mis-placed and overhit passes in 65 minutes than I've ever seen from him. You don't judge it on one game, though, as every player will have days when standards drop and the fact is that Maguire has been consistently excellent over a long period.

As for the opinions of Pig fans, they're worthless. I've forgotten more about football than any of those cretins have ever known.

There was a woman sat behind me who kept shouting 'Come on Harry!' every time he had the ball. Admittedly she refers to most of our players only by number ('come on number 9' etc), but I think no one told her Harry has not played for us for several years now.
