I think you have a point except we aren't, clubs like Rochdale mk etc on what would appear far smaller budgets seem to get better scouted players, hungrier players, which beggars the question why?
Surely we have a better scouting network, higher resources to pinpoint these players, so why is it we get what appears on the whole to be mediocre players while mk, Rochdale etc seem to unearth goal scorers season after season.
Now you're getting the idea fella it is not Billy big bollocks at all to expect Sheffield United to be doing much better. We are by far the biggest and best supported club in the division, only Coventry should be able to run us close or maybe Bristol C. Yet look at the attendance figures, on their return to the Ricoh Coventry pull 11,000, top of the table Bristol pull in you guessed it 11,000 at the same time we bring in close to 20,000, now unless their prices are double ours we get near on 50% more income. No disrespect to the likes of Crawley and Rochdale but there is no way that they should be able to compete with us in the same way as we could not compete with Wolves last season. Our resources should make us easily better than most clubs in League One in all departments and we should even then have an edge on the better supported clubs unfortunate enough to find themselves down in this shit division as we are. Other clubs in this league find goal scorers either for free or for modest outlay only Bristol C have spent big on a striker yet two and a half years down the line (no pun intended) we still cant find even a 15 goal a season striker, it really is a piss poor effort from all concerned at BDTBL.

It's amazing that we no longer seem to produce any strikers of worth any more...

I bet our budget is not that much bigger than the average for league one , dont know why people think it is
You might be right, but it certainly should be.

I think it's fair to say after the cup money,Maguire fee and increased ST sales we should no doubt have a bigger budget than anybody else in this league.

A bigger budget means better players but in reality it also means you have a more expensive squad in terms of wages. In Rochdale's case, they may have 14-15 players all on the same(ish) money and the rest of their squad will be made up of juniors. We probably have around 20 players all on the same, if not more, money than Rochdale's highest earners but of those 20, only 11 can be on the pitch matching their best XI.

A bigger budget means that our XI should be better than their XI but we also have loads of money sitting on the bench and in the stands. If we matched Rochdale and had, say 14-15 quality players and filled the rest with the academy lads then we would see much more of a difference but the academy lads have been pushed back because Clough seemingly wants around 20 'senior' players. It's a tough decision for him to balance the books and squad and it's a long season but a bigger budget is negated somewhat when you have the likes of Porter and Butler sat in the stands.

You can't argue with the type of squad he's trying to build and the real strength of our budget should tell in the loan market and in January but at the end of the day, if we don't get a quality XI on the pitch, it won't matter.

At the end of the day and, in the long run, the best supported teams will always be the most successful. An amazing season for Rochdale is mid table in the third tier. An amazing season for us would be mid table in the PL. The difference is expectation is entirely due to the differential resources available to the two teams.

I am with Ken, it is a source of deep shame that we are now in our fourth season in the third tier. This is even worse than when we spent 5 seasons in the lower divisions in the early 80's; in those days the difference in respources between us and the likes of Rochdale were a lot less than they are now. If we were not in an utter cess pit, teams like that should not be able to live with us.

If that ever becomes a fact all the excitement in the unpredictability of football will be dead....

When talking about strikers, NC remarks "am happy with what we have got…". But what you have got NC won't get you promotion. Highest win so far is 2-1. Not surprising the top 3 - Bristol Titty, Peterborough, MK Dons average far more .

for starters we went to peterborough and won , and I remember clough a forest win the title with more points than goals and thats when it was 2 points for a win , 28 1-0 wins sounds boring but if we do that I dont give a monkeys , you get promoted on points not goals as we found out harshly when we failed to win enough in our last 3 the year we out scored wednesday, but lost out

But you get more points by scoring more goals. There can't seriously be anyone who would argue that we are currently scoring enough goals to to be serious contenders this season. Of all the things "clappers and slashers" can grapple with, surely this is one everyone can agree on?

jhust putting forward that most succesful sides win more games 1-0 than any other clubs , course we want more goals , but its not always the be all

The point is that right now, scoring more goals is the be all and end all.

Yep, needing another striker..... I've got RSI in my right knee after 2 years of saying the same thing.

Great result tonight, either way :)
