My stepson is nearly 17, and I'd describe our relationship as strained at the best of times.
All year he's shown me not one ounce of respect or caring, but he's just given me a card where inside he wrote "thank you for being the father that I never had, I really appreciate all you
Did he leave with 3 beans and hope to buy his own cow ?Still waiting for my father to come back from the shop with the milk so I am, itās only been 20 years so it has.
I'm sure he feels the love from you mate .Bittersweet day for me yesterday. I didn't have a great relationship with my father at the back end of his life, and having become a parent since he passed away I really wish I'd have made more of an effort to repair the relationship with my dad whilst he was here.
My stepson, who is coming up to 18, wrote some lovely words again this year saying thank you for all I've done for him, and being there for him. Means a lot, particularly as we've had a bit of a rocky relationship (I'm the strict one trying to instill the principles and values which will hopefully help him to become a good man).
It does sadden me that my soon to be 7 year old doesn't understand the concept of father's day (due to his autism), and can't speak to wish me a happy father's day. Of course my wife bought a card and present on his behalf, but I do sometimes wonder if he knows how much I love him, and all that.
Probably selfish on my part as he's the most important one, but a birthdays, Christmas, etc you do feel sad that he doesn't understand the concept of it, and you miss the joy that many other parents get.

Nearly blubbed there and then.
