I was there and still maintain we should have stuck to a United front and backed Warnock/slammed Megson but, as it was, lots of Blades just used this as a convenient way to try and oust Neil.

I also think it's incredible WBA only scored 3! What a satchel of cu*ts.

I had a Baggie mate in the away end that day. We travelled back together and pretty much laughed the entire way home not particularly because it was funny but just because we couldn't think what else to say about it.

Without doubt the most bizarre day I have ever had watching any football match

Neil Warnock dragged our name through the dirt that day. That cunt Megson notwithstanding.

Didn't the FA, linesman and Fourth Official all unanimously clear Neil Warnock of any wrong doing? I think they did, and effectively brand Gary Megson a liar.

The only two people who dragged our name through the mud that day were Santos and Suffo. Although two West Brom players should have also walked during that brawl, especially Darren Moore.

Well the 3-0 sanction stood regardless. It's one of a catalogue of antics that we had to endure.
Under Wilder we now have dignity. I have little time for extra-curricular shite.

Was there a pitch invasion when a few from H-Block liberated a flag from the away end and brought it back?
I remember the game being a bit dull and then someone emerged from their end with a flag and ran into our end. I wouldn't call it a pitch invasion more of a stealth exercise by one fella. God knows how he got over there. It got the crowd going before the main event.

Crazy decision from Warnock to bring Santos on. When Johnson was at Forest he elbowed Santos in the face and fractured his cheek bone so it was obvious what was going to happen.

That day,I was in the south stand front row
I can honestly say I've never seen such niggly annoying tactics as I saw from that twat's players that day
Constant digging, kicking, elbowing from WBA players obviously on a mission to wind us up as much as they could
It worked
Not defending Suffo but many people didn;t see what the sneaky bastards were up to close up they were horrible
Smegson all over
I wouldn't piss on that ginger twat if he was on fire

Agree we did ourselves no favours that day and deserved the publicity we got but how Megson and his players get away scot free was scandalous. The ginger bastard lied through his teeth and 2 or 3 of his own players were well out of order. What Santos did was barmy but when another player smashes your cheekbone in and refuses to even apologise or send his best wishes that I am of the opinion what goes around comes around. My dad used to say "If you can't take it then don't dish it out"

I disagree. From Warnock's point of view, he'd have hoped the history would have fired Santos up enough in a way that would benefit the team, not as some personal vengeance mission. Easy to say it was bound to happen in retrospect, but I don't recall Iain Hume going after Morgs in that way when they locked horns after he'd recovered from his similarly awful injury. The responsibility is clearly Santos's and Suffo's for making that the farce it was.

I know it is ancient history, and I am not looking to pick an argument with you Whitehawk, but blaming Warnock is the easy option. Do you not think that the cunt Megson is equally to blame for picking Johnson in the first place? If Megson was entitled to pick Johnson, then Warnock was entitled to pick Santos. Plus, Johnson started it one year earlier with the forearm smash when we entertained the scabs.

That Peter Odluvo, eh?

As for Santos's "badly-timed two-footed lunge", I'm not having that at all; the timing was perfect - look how far he kicked the twat up in the air?

As for hand-wringing and shame, bollocks to all that; I might be a peace-loving hippie with all the Gong albums but I fucking loved all 82 minutes of it! And I never want anyone else to have their game abandoned for not having enough players left on the pitch; it's OUR record and I'll nail that bloody blue plaque up on the wall in the South Stand car-park myself if necessary, as well as adding statues of Santos and Suffo in action poses to The Legends Of The Lane.

What 3-0 sanction? You mean we lost 3-0. There were no sanctions.

Ullathorne and Brown were genuinely injured and didn't play again for the rest of that season.

It was only a figment of Megson's imagination that we deliberately got the match abandoned to try and get it replayed.

We had nothing left to play for that season, so had no reason to want it replayed and nobody but Megson ever suggested that might be a possibility.

I thought it was given as 4-0. Did I make that up?

Edit: I quite clearly did make it up. Can't find that anywhere. I had it in mind that it was 3-0 when the ref blew but that the FA\FL (or whoever) made it 4-0 to punish us further along with a pittance of a fine (10K?).

Agreed. Whole thing was an absolute hoot!

The way I remember it was that a Blade emerged from G/H Block, ran over to the West Brom fans and grabbed a Union Jack flag they had draped over the white railings at the front (near the BL/SS corner flag) and ran back to the Blades with the flag held high. Impressive stuff.

Made extra crazy by the fact that it had been reported in the run up to the game that Santos had publicly stated he was going to get revenge.

Fun fact- according to Fit and Proper? by Matthew Bell, an emergency board meeting was held 45 minutes after the game and Warnock was fired, but he managed to talk himself back into the job over the weekend.

Nice of the Star to comment

Yes. 'Worst tackle ever'? About as bad as Sasso's assault on Hourihane last week. And to reinforce the Star's bias, a 'readers comment' (which should have been 'pulled') says:

Sheffield Uniturd - Lowering the tone since 1889. Vermin. Always have been, always will be.

Yes, United had 3 players banned for a betting scam. Bramall Lane witnessed the murder of 96 fans and United were let off a £20m loan by the Co-op.

I just caught the triumphant return journey. It's strange in a way, at that time there were some naughty folk on H block and yet someone could get to the away fans and back with no one noticing. I sat on a slightly more sanitised G block for a few years (Robson until Adkins) and can't imagine anyone getting more than ten feet on the track due to the number of stewards.

I made a post in BU (or SUISA) in the night before the match that I was concerned about Warnock's pre match comments and talking about playing Santos. After that tackle I got up and told Lmaobob (who was 4 then) that we are leaving the match

This game was worth it in hindsight alone, because we now have the greatest ms paint image ever made for Sheffield Utd....

Somebody put it on this thread, I'd have that on a t shirt.. I would..
