'Memries' Happy Anniversary - Battle of Bramall Lane

I just caught the triumphant return journey. It's strange in a way, at that time there were some naughty folk on H block and yet someone could get to the away fans and back with no one noticing. I sat on a slightly more sanitised G block for a few years (Robson until Adkins) and can't imagine anyone getting more than ten feet on the track due to the number of stewards.

I think it was the sheer surprise that caught everyone off-guard. Around the time of the WBA game, does anybody remember a fan running towards a linesman from the South Stand (Leicester at home rings a bell) and flattening him? As you say, some very naughty stuff went off back then. It was from that area of the SS that three flares were launched at the Wendy end in a derby and another time, one was 'launched' (possibly Leeds at home) and it hit the underside of the SS roof.

I made a post in BU (or SUISA) in the night before the match that I was concerned about Warnock's pre match comments and talking about playing Santos. After that tackle I got up and told Lmaobob (who was 4 then) that we are leaving the match

It was SUISA; I remember your annoyance at the whole episode. And there was me thoroughly enjoying it all. I should be ashamed but, erm, I'm not.

It was Mrs Geordie Blade's first ever match, and I had to explain that that sort of thing doesn't usually happen.

My 6 year old daughter's second match and she'd decided that Suffo was her favourite player.

"Daddy, why are the men pushing Suffo and why did the other man fall down?"

How do you explain to a six year old the old Galsgow kiss?

An odd atmospher that day and I'd forgotten about the flag. There was something in the air and certainly Megson made a meal of it plus some. I've never been a Warnock fan but felt for him after that. Brown never played again that season yet Megson's rantings overlooked facts like that.

I do remember it being hilarious when we were down to 8 and Curle was enjoying himself on a yellow, kicking all their players in the air. He obviously knew the rules but calculated the ref couldn't send off a fourth and force the abandonment.

Anyway we were hard done by and I still maintain Santos got the ball.

I wonder why The Stir recycled that old story? Surely can't be anything to do with a Pig bias. Not one of our better days for sure but that ginger cunt Megson got away with murder that day every one of his allegations were found to be false in the enquiry that followed, something The Star kept very low key. If I remember right we were fined for not controlling our players that is all. WBA could have easily had two sent off as well.

Yes, I am not surprised some enjoyed the affray and I do enjoy watching these kind of things as long as it doesnt involve the Blades. I felt that NW had hyped up the Johnson/Santos situation in his pre match talk and I was surprised that we got off lightly and that NW kept his job

I was sat on the Kop that day, about half way up. My memory is that Curle pretty much grabbed their striker by the neck as he was was bearing down on goal and flung him to the floor. Extraordinary that he didn't receive at least a booking but it seemed to happen only a few minutes after the melee so perhaps the ref was a bit worried about a third red in such a short space of time.

Anyone blaming the whole thing on Warnock is crazy. As barmy as Tracey's handball outside the box was hardly part of the masterplan was it?

The story that the Mail and others will also recycle every year? It's in football history as a continual "on this day in football" piece – and will continue to be so because I'm afraid it was a uniquely interesting moment in the game, regardless of whether it paints the club in a bad light or not.

I'm in the 'loved it' camp.

Memries:

- I shouted "Rrrrrrrrrevenge" to Santos as he warmed up and he winked at me.

- Micalijo, former S24SU Most Popular Poster of the Year, thought the Blade who nicked the flag was a WBA fan taking the piss and sprinted down to the front to angrily remonstrate with him.

- A Baggies fan who would later go on to be a good friend but who I didn't know at the time copped for a pie in the face which was thrown from the South Stand.

My only disappointment is that Megson escaped without punishment for slinging shit about with no regard for the truth.

Yeah I understand that but The Star never recycle the story of how the Pig fans invaded the pitch attacking Palace fans and players even following them down the tunnel on the day they were relegated to league one. That day was much worse than what went off on the pitch at the lane yet nothing much was said about it, contrast that to the day a Leeds scum pushed their keeper in the face causing outrage in S6.

I imagine the majority of football fans don't care in the slightest about the events at that Palace game. Whereas the Battle of Bramall Lane is well-known and still hilarious today. It's therefore pretty obvious why one is talked about far more.

I remember it well..Loved I..Angriest ever match..Much beer consumed after..And if I recall right very few paperboys on the official.site backed the blades ..Or indeed Warnock..I'll hold my hands up as a one time thing..I supported him that day..Never before, never since but the hyperbole on the ginger whinger site was off the scale...It was running abuse..I think 6 of my non De plumes on there got banned...I even borrowed spaffmonkey to dish it out.. Apologises to you know who...

It was a fun few days

Johnson got off lightly - after that deliberate elbow and serious damage to his face it's a wonder Santos didn't aim that tackle at his goolies. The bastard that did for Dane Whitehouse should have got his just deserts too.

Sorry it's West Brom but it's 11 mins of highlights of the day:

I'll say this... it wasn't a Desso back then!

Some footage I don't remember seeing before there, including Smokin' Keith's sterling efforts to collect another red card and Michael Brown's rugby tackle that would have been a second yellow in any other game of football. Suffo's headbutt in slow-motion is well picked out too.

That was Curle every game for us – probably one of the nastiest pieces of work I've seen play for us. I don't actually think he was trying to get sent off himself, but instead provoke a reaction from a West Brom player or two through stepping up his typical nastiness.

Poor miss by Jagielka in the first half that could have changed the course of the game too.

Agreed. Curle had plenty of opportunity to get himself off. He could have raised his hands or thrown a punch in one of the shoving matches and left the ref with no choice.

If the alleged purpose of trying to get himself sent off was to get the match abandoned, why not simply go off injured like Brown and Ullathorne eventually did?

Still got the programme, will be worth a few bob in a couple of hundred years
Don't say that. I stormed out after the two red cards (was gutted about Suffo as he was one of my favourites of that team) and threw ours in a puddle. Don't think my mum has forgiven me!

My memory is that it was obvious Santos would go for revenge if he got the opportunity, I saw it coming when the moment arrived and leapt up cheering as if we'd scored a goal when Johnson went up in the air. I can't imagine what state Johnson would have been in if Santos had gone for his standing leg.

I also cheered when the red card came out for Suffo as I'd seen a Baggie throw a punch and assumed it was for him, which probably fuelled my anger when I saw Suffo walk.

The biggest villain of the day was Megson. I still can't believe he got away with the things he said.

Santos should have waited until 89 minutes and then done a proper job.

Even better - a pre arranged gbh on Johnson by Curle with Santos nearby at 89 minutes.

UTB

Megson must've been fuming at WBA's first goal. Far too many passes. Surely the best goal ever scored by one of his teams?

I reckon Curle was trying to provoke a few West Brom players into seeing red and even the numbers up a bit, as ex Wolves he had plenty reason to hate the Baggies as well...love his little sneaky grin and wink at 8:24, tells you everything!
