Happy 130th Birthday Sheffield United

And cutting a rather sprightly figure these days for a 130 year old. Utd haven't gone deaf yet, nor stink of piss, but like most old uns, they do have a tendency to look back a bit too much at the 'grand old days'.

Gotta love the cantankerous frustrating old bstard though.

Cheeky beggar! My first match (programme pictured above) was August 1953, when the club was 64 years old, so I have managed more than half its history. As you can see from the league table, I was a glory hunter - we were 4th from top, one point behind, and a match in hand on the 3 above us. Needless to say, we lost (4-3) and the next 66 years have been pretty well downhill all the way...

Next season will be my first as a 'senior citizen'. I want a cushion.

Yes. I had seen the 53 Cup final on a neighbour's 9" TV, bought or rented for the Coronation, I assume. That was probably the leverage I used to be allowed to go to the match, aged 6. We stood at the Lane End, which will have been less crowded. I desperately wanted to see Matthews and Hagan, who were 'superstars'. The irony is, as I am sure you know, that it was always known as the 'Matthews Cup Final', ignoring the fact that Stan Mortensen scored a hat-trick. Life can be cruel!

Defending was generally rather basic, shall we say. But the way of playing was in my experience not as it continued to be set out on paper, which was out-of-date even in 1953. United will have played something like (allow for the fact that I was only 6 at the time!) a 4-4-2, with Johnson playing as far back as the full-backs (none of those would go beyond the half-way line), and one of the wing-halves (Joe Shaw?) would probably have had extra defensive duties. The 4 up front would have been the 2 wingers, plus Browning and Brook; Brook would be the only one to drop back when we lost the ball. And Hagan and Rawson, with some help from Joe Shaw and Brook, would be responsible for midfield. Wing backs and overlapping centre-halves would have been regarded as science fiction; running those distances would have led to demands for extra fags at half-time.

Yes, I was at the Blackpool game (4-3). In my mid teens by 1953. Stood right behind the goal at the Kop end. My Blades heroes, at that time, were Ted Burgin and , of course, Jimmy Hagan. Hagan was the star of that game and outshone Stan Matthews. Jimmy even found time to mark Stan at times. What a match- what a team and what memories.

Great to read your first post on here. I look forward to you sharing more memories with us.
 
Below is the programme from March 21st, 1959, discussing the 70th anniversary. They were announcing the appointment of John Harris as manager, and in 2 short paragraphs go through every manager of the first 70 years. How things change! In the following 60 years managers have come and gone ever more frequently.

It's not far away from the 100th anniversary of the last time we won a trophy of any note :eek:
