Hammond

The other angle on that scenario is that so many players will have grave doubts whether Adkins wants them next summer, especially if we go up and wonder why they should play for him.

Whatever happened to players playing for their future, make a determined statement that they are good enough to play for this club? It's a shame that balls are very few and far between in our current squad. We have no leaders, we have no hard men and I'm struggling to think of anything we've actually got (apart from a shed load of overpaid, under talented, useless sponges).

Thing is, don't they realise that no other team will want them come the end of the season in any case?! I mean, what other team out there is in such a sorry state that they'd snap up any of these players deemed surplus by us??

Back onto Hammond. I have just watched the goal on the football league show. Shocking defending, but the lad that scored, who was unmarked at the edge of the box to whom Basham (??) headed the ball directly to - looks like he was Hammond's man. He was just hovering around marking air and nowhere near the unmarked goal scorer.(Hammond is 35 isn't he?)

I cant believe our so called fans if we won the lottery and beat chelsea 98-1 you would all.complain that they scored one and that you want your pound back for the lottery

Jesus of nazareth tied his ass to a tree and walked all the way to jerusalem so why cant we ?

Im not writing our chances off while ever alcohol and prescription drugs are freely available

Nope, he's 32, he just appears older because he can barely move.

I was most surprised recently to discover it was only Martyn Woolford's 30th birthday, making him about 6 months older than me and almost as slow and unfit.

Haha got me.
No I was referring to his shirt number

Isn't Hammond meant to be our new defensive midfielder? Breaking up play and the such like so Basham can go to defense? If he'll get stuck in then I can forgive his distributon issues, but if he's not then he's as useful as Ian Hamilton (who I always considered much worse than Hunt as it happens).

When I see Hammond play I think back to Kevin McDonald and remember how clean, well weighted and direct the vast majority of his passes were. I look at Hammond and see the polar opposite. Most of his passes are under hit, bobble off the ground more than once before reaching their final destination (whether the intended one or not) and look like they've come off his shin. McDonald used extremely good balance to hold off two and three players at a time and maintain possession. Hammond always looks like he's over stretching, making him easier to dislodge.

This is basic technique. I'm hoping for, rather than expecting better, because surely simple passing is not down to match fitness, but just basic ball control.
I made a bit of a come back for the office team and I wasn't aware of how unfit I was. I was fucking awful, everything had gone. After a few runs it came back and people who'd only ever seen me play for that team were shocked. I was genuinely a different player.
So fingers crossed.

For Hammond read Paddy McCarthy. A player who has featured in the Premier league and is of the opinion that he is way above SUFC and league one.

>>It has to be debatable whether the slow build-up, tappy-tappy football is appropriate for League 1.
or anywhere actually. the barca style is just a fashion like longball was for a while.. trouble is all these coaches now think everyone should play like that. i'd go as far as to say if the old route one United were here right now playing their old style they would walk this league

Return of the Hoofwafa

Return of the Hoofwafa

It's not a case of return of Hoofwafa. It's about 11 players on that pitch that represent what being a Blade is about. Giving 100%. Run through a brick wall for the cause. A Del Boy Geary. A Bob Booker. A Chris Morgan. A manager that doesn't accept defeats at Crewe with a 'there are no easy games in League one' type comment.

There isn't one person at the club that I can identify myself with.

If Phipps wants to know what to do then he needs to take a long hard look at the culture that currently exists. It's not good Jim.

Rubbish, we've got a player who gives us nothing different to whats Coutts does. Playing them together is a big mistake. We need central midfield players who are going to get into the box to score goals, not sit and pass it sideways and backwards to keep the ball at all costs.

I don't want Adkins out but you've got question his signings they are not very good. Hamming may have been good when he was at Southampton but that was 4 years ag0.

We are desperate for an injection of pace in all departments the team is just too slow. You very rarely see a united player putting the ball past an opponent and out pace them, that's why they always double and pass backwards or sideways.

I think he was too nice with the squad in the summer, he should have had a massive cull of Cloughs squad.

I think he may been shackled by our board not wanting to pay players off from their contracts.

We'll have to see what happens in January if he's still here! Hopefully we might sign the players we need to get out of this fucking desperate league. UTB

It was criminal that Adkins didn't make a change until after they scored yesterday. It was plain to see from start of 2nd half (and later part of 1st half) what was coming and that Baxter, Hammond and Coutts were getting overrun as a trio - needed to get legs in the midfield straight away but Adkins just let it drift on and on..... very poor IMO.

Wednesday signed Barkley and 50% of the fans stated he wasn't good enough.

The real reason was he was playing balls in to spaces the players should have been moving in to. He was WAY too good for Wednesday.

Maybe Hammond is the same; too good for the players around him

Couldn't agree more fella

It's a fair assessment, but I'd rather link Coady with Barkley and link Hammond with Monty or a slightly better Doyle.

If Hammond stays he will become the 2nd Michael Doyle.

The only saving grace for me with Hammond is I hope he is not match fit and there is still plenty to come.

As for pig fans and Barkley - shows they know fuck all about football.

Well if he is, things are far worse than any of us realised!!

Throughout his career he's always been a combative, hard working midfielder with a limited range of passing but excellent at breaking up play. From what I've seen, he's now no better than Michael Doyle in fact, he's not even as good.

Utd have had some fantastic top midfielders who finished their careers here, Cowans, Speed and McCall to name, three. All could run the game, lift the team and constantly look to create chances, all whilst giving 100 percent, week in week out.

Sadly Dean Hammond is not in the same class :(

Fixed it for you

Worryingly we seem to have replaced clough who bought his old boys with Adkins who appears to be doing the same, do they realise the hot girl in school got older slower and fatter?..

In football terms we have managers who go back to thier old sweethearts, not realising that time has past and they're a bit saggy now...

I've been in touch with a Leicester City pal and he has commented " not seen him for a while, wrong end of his career, slow these days. Usually sub brought on with 20 minutes to go to shore up defensive midfield once the game has slowed. Gives away many fouls, never dirty ones just mistimed or obstructions"

Hammond has made the following league and cup appearances for Leicester over 2 years and hasn't been on loan in that time:

2013/14 10 plus 22 as sub, 1 goal.
2014/15 9 plus 3 as sub

As I am trying to be positive I'll refrain from comments. Big landmark signing for our manager. Hope we haven't done a deal for January before getting opportunity to evaluate his contribution.

Are we glad Nigel waited to get Hammond on loan rather than buying him in August? At least we can send him back to Leicester. Good planning and foresight Nigel!

I admire your optimism in thinking he's going back to Leicester. :(
