We should pay what we think Souter is worth not what they think, that is a sure fire way to admin.

I personally would not pay more than £5m, but fear we are being pushed into a corner as yet again wilder has no alternative lined up.

Leicester have an amazing off field set up, including huge training facility. And are a one city club with the council hell bent on helping them.
So they should be smashing it.

Their DoF is hated (Rudkin, no relation). Their demise tracks back to poor player recruitment for many years after the title win as they chased European football (Brendan Rogers era).
As far as I can see the main success factor in modern football is good player recruitment. That is what we need, however we decide to go about it. Wilders mates Hoyland and Allen dont strike me as being capable of this.
The rise we had in 2016 was Wilder/Knill getting the best out of Paul Mitchell’s lower league gems. Mitchell got binned off as he struggled to find players who worked in the prem and probably got a bit cosy/had health issues. He is probably the member of staff we haven’t adequately replaced/upgraded.
A good owner who is strategic and on top of these things would probably recognise this. Middlesbrough’s recruitment has been good recently as has Prestons. You probably need to be looking at smaller clubs who are working well in the transfer market and then think about poaching their scouting staff.

Even in the last couple of years we haven't done badly with our lower league signings, like Burrows, Cooper and One.

We've signed a number of established players with background from the top two divisions the past few years and that's expensive, especially in terms of wages. They've not all been old like Ings and Mee, but most have been around for a few years and I think most of us have known about them when they signed, like Campbell, Shackleton, O'Hare, Chong, Tanganga, Rothwell, Riedewald, McCallum, McGuinness.

In Matos and Cannon we did try to go for expensive potential, but it seems our assessment of them was way off.

So we've largely gone for established, pretty expensive players, not potential. These types of players may do a decent job (or not) at this level, but they are a) unlikely to suddenly develop into PL players and b) unlikely to give us much of a profit.

Our abroad recruitment has been poor and I have no idea what kind of foreign scouting structure we have. It seems a waste of time to suggest/discuss targets abroad at the moment.

So, yes, agree, we should probably look more for talent in the lower leagues!

I feel down on United full stop right now but this is all very depressing and just shows how badly United have squandered our PL opportunities.

We manage to get promoted to the PL for the 3rd time in recent memory, sell our best two players and then unveil Hamer as our marquee signing.

Cov go up for the first time since Dion Dublin was a lad. He’s since had a total career change and has viewed more houses than my missus on a late night right move trawl. They’re somehow able to persuade our marquee signing that it would be better to go and warm their bench behind their new 30m man than hang around with our bunch of no hopers. All while we recoup peanuts and can’t afford to sign anyone.

To be fair, Wilder also had him in and out of the squad. I think he was always one of those players that Wilder probably wouldn’t have signed but he knew his quality.

Fitness & mobility is the biggest issue for Hamer. He struggled with getting around the pitch & seeing out 90 minutes. Undeniable talent though

If it’s £5.5m it’s obviously not great. But equally it’s probably about the best we could hope for given the respective age and amount left on his contract.

Ultimately when you consider Gus is probably one of the 10 highest paid players in the championship. There’s probably another £2 million saved in wages, bonuses, tax&NI to add on to that.

It will go a decent way to cover part of the lack of PL money.

The owners spent the last little bit of relegation money we had on hiring / firing Selles and like you said a data approach of signing.

If it’s right that we spent a combined £10m on Chong & Mccguiness (the source is Darren Smith so probably take that with a pinch of salt) then we absolutely pissed what we had up the wall
