I believe in the old adage. Don't go back, either player or manager. It invariably doesn't work.
Oops sorry I had forgot about Wilder

Selling our best creative player to replace him with expensive, injury prone defensive players is about a damning statement as you can make about the current set up at the club.

If Philips is the replacement we need to be very worried.

There's absolutely no way that Phillips is Hamer's replacement.

We (the club and the fans) have expected for months that Hamer (& Peck) may be leaving the club this window. This hasn't crept up on any of us.
It's how the club respond to his sale that is key.

For arguments sake if he left for £5m but we got say McAtee in on loan - is that so bad?*
If we got a left-sided version of Romelle Donovan in as his replacement - a raw youngster trying to play regular professional football - i think that would go down like a lead balloon.

*I understand they play different positions... it's an analogy. What i mean is - if this allows a high profile Premier League loan.

A few thoughts cross my mind...
1. We're unbalanced as a team with both Hamer and O'Hare being shoe-horned in
2. It doesn't seem to occur to CW that he could rotate them in the No.10 position, or he's been unable to recruit a proper left-winger hence needs must
3. Some of our best football last season was, if I remember correctly, when Hamer was injured
4. Hamer is always going to get suspended at some point
5. Hamer seems unable to last 90 minutes
6. O'Hare is almost always available and runs his socks off for 90+ minutes

I know about Hamer's creativity (though it tends to happen in "moments"), but if we can use the proceeds from his sale to buy a proper left-winger, I think we'd be a better team.
Yes.

The replacement’ is probably already at the club in O’Hare.

No intel and I want him around BUT the thought of current Hamer in the Prem does tickle me

He'll be out of shape on the global stage, pinging passes like the former pro in a 5 aside game

To add to the above. Potential left-sided players from the Championship last season:

  • Mehmeti, Philogene & Clarke (Ipswich) - will any be available on loan?
  • Mason-Clarke & Wright (Coventry) - will either be available on loan as part of the deal?
  • Azeez (Millwall) - with Hamer money, can we tempt a purchase? Can play right or left
  • Thomas (Stoke) - would love him. Looks like West Ham sniffing at >£10m
  • Saito & Chair (QPR) - permanent with Hamer money?
  • Murphy (Portsmouth) - had 2 great seasons for Pompey
  • BBD (Southampton) - most like of the lot. Would like him competing with Hamer, not replacing
  • Johnston (WBA) - Wilder wanted him before
Chakvetadze - Would have been an ideal replacement. Gone to Udinese for ~£5m

Potential PL loans?? Chelsea or Man City must have some available. Mayenda or Mundle at Sunderland maybe?

So he's saying his 'mate' paid his bit but the new owners might not have paid their bit?

Wouldn't trust anything that he said, just another social media attention-seeker.
No, he could be saying that we owe money based on appearances. Who knows, we may have to pay an instalment if he plays 125 games for example (he's played 123 for us)

Being realistic Hamer was always going to go this season. 1 Year left on his contract. SISU along with Weeds ( Hamer has the same agent as Gnoto) and Feyenoord, are the likely destinations.

Its not him going thats the issue for me its the inabiltiy of our recruitment team to get the best deal for SUFC. They consistently undersell outgoings Brooks being the latest give away. For that reason if it has to be SISU then it would be in the best interests of the Club if players plus cash was agreed.

As for the suggestion we will get no more than £5 million for him then it would be in our best interests to let him run down his contract and go for it this season.

SISU have a number of playes that would boost our current threadbare squad. Ellis isnt one of them for me.

Matt Grimes who we could offer the captaincy to, Woolfenden, Sakamoto, who only has 1 year left on his contract and plays wide left are all possible options. Its our inability to get a deal across the line that concerns me the most.

Grimes is a long shot as he's just captained SISU into the EPL. CW has been a long time admirer. If we did get him it may put to bed the financial and injury risk folly of going for Phillips.

That's kind of fine if we're saying Hamer would have been no10 and O'Hare plays at no10 instead, but who's the competition/backup/rotation for O'Hare...? We've not got anyone in to play LW either - where Gus primarily played under Wilder.

In defence of Darren he’s said more than once that the transfer fee for Hamer is settled.

He’s only mentioned add-ons because people keep asking what could be owed.

Appearance fees if they were/are owed are quite minor amounts.

Undoubtedly our most talented player, but he is a luxury who means we have to sacrifice some balance in the team and puts more pressure on the team defensively. He gets the numbers with goals and assists because he’s constantly trying things, but he does hinder the team in other ways & gives the ball away a lot. In our financial position now I’m not sure we can accommodate Hamer & O’Hare in the squad and risk losing him for nothing.

We’ve been shoehorning him and O’Hare into the team really. Obviously would prefer not to sell him but if we replaced him with a proper left winger and an athletic CM, we could be a more balanced team (which we were last season when he was out injured).

Peck/Blaster Jairo/athletic CM
Donovan/Chong O’Hare Tricky LW/BBD
Bamford

It does lack the spark of Hamer but it’s a clear system.

Hard disagree with those first two points.

Hamer and O'Hare are different players who don't play in the same position, and have different strengths.

Their link-up play has at often times over the past 2 seasons been part of our most promising attacking movements.
I've absolutely adored those moments when the two of them click, it's a joy to watch. Arguably most notably, the move into Campbell for 1-0...

As mattbianco1 sez BBD is the obvious replacement. Second spell with us was average at best but he played out of position ont right
Except the problem is, if sides sit in and we need to pick out a 'moment'. Hamer takes the ball, tries to dictate play and make something happen. He looks for a pass they very few others see.

BBD does not and cannot offer that. He's good in an attacking or counter-attacking side but largely ineffective in gradual build-up play against a low block.

Luxury player ........

Terrible players those luxury player like ndiaye and Gibbs White

What we need is a team of Nick Montgomerys

We will see if there has ever been any plan to replace hamer

We cannot replace Hamer. Thinking that is a possibility is insane. The only question is simple finance maths - does the cost of retaining him, i.e. not taking whatever transfer fee he would raise and paying his wages, minus the cost of ownership for his replacement for 26/27, improve our chances of promotion so much that it makes sense to retain him given the riches that the PL provides. As we are not (in my opinion at least) in a promotion window even if we retain Hamer, that is an overwhelming no

Top 8 is play offs. Keeping Gus drives us towards at least some ambition. If the offer is a measly 5 million I hope we have owners with the good sense to say not a chance you stay the rest of your contract and get us in the play offs we will reward you with a huge bonus. They didn’t pay 110 million to languish 12-18th in Championship. They need to stop making rash silly decisions.

Will be a big test for Wilder with no Hamer to rely on tbh. If you have no difference maker on the pitch the manager has to be the difference maker with his tactics.
