We need money, he’s in the last year of his deal. We’d be stupid not to sell if we get a sensible offer
What we need is players that improve the team there is not a player we can get to replace him for the money we would make. Id let him play out his contract.

So we now write off £3 / £5m not to guarantee promotion but in the hope we will not get relegated

Of course you would, so would I because we’re fans…but we’re not paying the bills.

Seeing Hamer go on a free transfer isn’t something that a club like us has the financial ability to do. I’m not sure how anyone thinks we can? The same happened with Berge & Ndiaye

Love this logic shall we just sell everyone then? 🤣
I don’t understand how you think we’re in a financial position to just keep all our best players even if they don’t want to renew their contracts & let them go on a free.

There’s probably only 5-10 clubs in the world that can afford to do that

I’m glad you’re not my accountant.

What if the alternative option is that we extend his contract and keep hold of one of the best midfielders in the league? A couple of months back there was talk of him being open to an extension.

Someone apparently from Sky called Tim is now saying Coventry are in talks to resign Gus Hamer

We have offered him a revised contract, but what do you do if he will not sign it

This was this one move hamer knew this was going to happen when they went up, he’s been keeping an eye on things, good luck to him, thanks for everything gus.

Unfortunately, I work in finance. 🤣

What i care about is value, the money we would make from a hamer sale could never replace what a championship campaign of hamers talents can produce. With one year left on his deal the fee would be so poor we couldn’t afford anyone nearly half as good as him. So we would be having to spend more to replace his current contributions to the squad. If that means him walking on a free at the age of 31 so be it in my opinion.

unpopular opinion…

I think we looked a more solid … cohesive team without him last season.

However , he does have the ability to produce something out of nothing and do things others can’t

If we could find a ‘wild card’ who’s gonna cone off the bench and turn a game and replace him with that I wouldn’t be adverse to him leaving.
I agree BUT we do need that wild card. My worry is that we sell and never replace. Don’t necessarily mean with equal quality (probably impossible with current budget) but I terms of style. Otherwise we have a very samey and unimaginative midfield.

So we sell him for 5m. Invest in two other inferior players and yet these two inferior players will somehow contribute more than the best player in the division in recent times?

If we needed lots of players I would get it, the whole sum of parts argument.

But right now we need one good centre half and we’ve already sold off Brooks for 8-10m. We don’t need multiple positions. We have 4 strikers for possibly 1 spot. We have 4 midfielders for 2. We have 2 senior fullbacks on each side. We have about 5 players at the moment in Hamer, O’Hare, Donovan, Marsh, Chong who can all play in a supporting 3. That’s not withstanding we may play 4-4-2 rather than 4-2-3-1 so you won’t start 60% of them.

If the whole purpose of running the football club is to not spend any of your own money then I’ll do it for nowt.

Keep Hamer and accept it costs you 5m to do so and start the season with confidence you’ll have a player who will get goals and assists on the Board. His departure might fund Kalvin Phillips who will score one goal per season. Someone has to score the goals.

We’ll swap Hamer for a year with Kalvin Phillips for a year and then Ben Brereton-Diaz in contract for 3 years and for a fee. At the end of his deal or near the end nobody will give us money for him.

If he was a high value (as in fee) asset then so be it. But at 29, we’ll get 5m and that’s peanuts. If we were getting 10-12m then i can see the significance.

We’re not a club that’s able to fund themselves. The owners don’t have the wealth & with the way the league works you have to balance the books. Hence why we’ve not spent the £7-8m received for Brooks.

For me it’s not about us selling players it’s about who we replace them with.

If you want to support a team that doesn’t sell their best players then Sheffield United aren’t the right club.
This is why we need the academy to keep churning out the next ‘asset’. Worries me when we don’t blood enough youngsters as this is the only way we can really create money out of nothing, as such. Brooks for example, he has been around the first team for years and then broke in. I worry that there are not other players like that around - would be nice to see the likes of One, Blacker, Sachdev on bench more as opposed to older veterans as this should be our priority. I don’t think we always make enough of the amazing academy we have.

Not sure where the creativity and flair comes from if he leaves tbh unless we replace him with jack Clarke or someone of similar skill and calibre

Ultimately every team, other than Real Madrid, sells their best players.

Playing devils advocate slightly but there’s no guarantee he leaves on a free. Clubs haven’t exactly been beating down our door to sign him and most have walked away judging him poor value.

I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if at the end of his contract there aren’t many decent offers for 30 year old second tier forward with a history of poor fitness and discipline.

Always said we shouldn't sell and if he gets us promoted this season he's good enough, if he doesn't then he leaves on a free being a one season PL player at the age of 31.

There is no financial sense to sell him at all. Plus makes the squad weaker.

However if he wants to leave and asks to leave and we say no, will that make him a different player?

🤣🤣 fair enough!

Like we’ve said, it depends on what you do with the money. I don’t think we’re in a position to not have a conversation with teams though & I think if we were offered £5m he’d go

£10m would make it a good deal, on his last season. He's a really special player on his day but he can't do 90 mins, overweight, will no doubt miss at least 5, maybe 8 games through suspension and injury. But yes can change a game in a moment
