So it's gone from having a meal, to downing 2 bottles of wine before a game 🤣
From buying fans shots, to getting shit faced with them 🤣
Yeah , alright 👍 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Crackers isn't it.

His first post literally said; man buys drink for other people. Man eats meal.
So you're both happy in the Championship then?

Do you think players in the top flight regularly drink?

Do you think Brighton, Fulham, Brentford or Forest got promoted with their player drinking and eating unhealthily?

Or do you think it's the 1980s?

Our fans are too stupid to understand modern football.

Fans like you two shouldn't be allowed to moan about the teams performance because you're happy with them not looking after their bodies.

🤣🤣 what have you had for your tea pal?!

Like the ramblings of a mad man.

I'm only responding because I'm finding this funny. Please say something else. Dare you.
He's not assisted or scored a goal in the final quarter of any game this season. If he took his fitness seriously and played fully for 90 minutes we'd be in the Premier League.

But you don't care, do you, as long as our players can have a drink?

I don't care about anything other than your meltdown at the fact I questioned your original post.

Following which you have somehow pigeon holed me as a chubby loving pub team supporter with zero ambition.

You sir, are a fucking loon. 🤣

You might want to look in a mirror given I've done none of that yet you seem to have made up that I have.

Straightjacket time.

Do you know that athletes can't fully recover if they have alcohol in their system,?

It's 2025, our fans want our players to be allowed to go out drinking and then also expect our team to be established in the Premier League.

Professional athletes should not be drinking during the time they're 'competing. Full stop.

Or should we pay players more per week than many earn in a year and yet allow them to take the piss?
Yes I’m fully aware of the affects of alcohol on training and also there are the benefits. The moderation and timing is key.

Professional athletes are adults and have far more testing and checks than normal individuals, they will be fully aware, as will the medical team on the impact of alcohol. It’s about managing the individual and their recovery.

There are other impactful choices which will affect a players recovery. Heavy weight sessions seem to be the norm, especially with a number of our players. This will certainly impact their readiness for matches. A meat free diet will also have a major impact on the recovery from both games and injury.

What is the defined period of “competing”? How are players training to reach their peak through the season? It’s not possible to be physically at the peak all season. Mentally too.

Some do, some don't. You needn't look further than the Tottenham players on the victory bus after they won a trophy. Bentancur, Romero, Johnson, and Maddison, at the very least, all looked extremely drunk. And they had a game a couple of days after that! Football players are like normal people; sometimes they like drinking in celebratory or social situations. Nothing wrong with that. I imagine Gus was buying shots for some fans after a victory.

After they won a trophy at the end of the season? I have zero issue with a footballer having a few drinks in summer or getting shitfaced if they've achieved something.

Bit different from drinking during the season?

I'm really not understanding your argument. Drinking alcohol makes recovery slower. It impacts on conditioning.

But you're arguing for it?

I'm literally saying that if a professional footballer doesn't drink he or she will be physically better than if they did.

Once again, Gus Hamer has not scored or assisted after 60 minutes of any game this season.

Why do you think that is? Is it because he's unfit?

I would make an educated guess that if he took the best care of himself possible he would be running around for 95+ minutes and having an impact on games.

We'd have got promoted. But it seems some think that it's more important for him to be able to go out drinking and eating unhealthily then Sheffield United getting promoted.

And don't get me wrong, he's probably our second most important player this season, but he could be so much better.

Tottenham had a couple of games left. They had won the Europa League, but they still had a few matches to go in the Premier League, so their season wasn't 'over', no matter if some players had checked out.

I don't know the exact date when Gus was drinking. There are some health benefits to drinking things like wine, so alcohol isn't all bad. I don't think you should be drinking night in, night out during the season, but I don't see the issue with letting players relax a little bit every so often. I doubt Gus is out drinking every single day, so I don't see the problem with him having some alcohol every so often.

The point is that the positives and negatives of alcohol are clear. It’s not an argument.

But as I said, timing, moderation, type of alcohol will all be managed by the player and the clubs medical staff.

However, there are a lot of other variables that can also impact recovery which will also be individual to each player but can have as much or more of an impact on the individual.

A player that doesn’t drink but is also vegan will most certainly have to manage their recovery more, will either have to supplement their diet or they will accept that their recovery will be longer. I’ve seen if in triathlon.

Affecting recovery time is also very different to affecting performance. I’ve trained in the alps on training camps, done it some years with booze, some with no booze at nights. My performance each day was better when I was boozing at night (approx 5 pints per night, mix of lager or wine equivalent). The HR stats were higher, but effort and times were also higher. Again, positives and negatives of alcohol are clear. So I guess you understand that.

I’m not arguing, I’m filling some gaps which seem apparent and also asking some questions on the terminology used, which you didn’t clarify, but that’s ok.

I will dispute the statement that Hamer doesn’t contribute to late goals because he drinks alcohol or he would be a premier league player if he didn’t drink. That’s clearly impossible to measure and certainly needs a little more than baseless speculation because he drinks wine and buys shots. There are players at the top level that drink and drink regularly.

It’s not an educated guess. You don’t know the full details of Hamer or the other players. It’s baseless speculation.

Heard he’s already sold his house… 😞
Aye
I’ve heard he’s (already) bought numerous new homes, (with more to follow) to cover every eventuality including in L**ds (because that would be too far to commute from his current abode), Glasgow (due to its culinary reputation) Rotterdam (because he’s previously played there - twice) Rio (because I’ve no idea where his specific place of birth is), oh plus London, Paris, New York, Munich.

Apparently everybody is talking about it
[Apologies from the late ‘70’s(& early’80’s)?!?]

As an aside, he must have a fabulous in demand abode, & an incredibly efficient estate agent (.if that’s not an oxymoron) to complete the sale in < 3 weeks
Despite my advertising our house sale on here immediately following Wembley no bugger has been near albeit that may be summat to do with the vendor (or the neighbours)🤔

I know it doesn't mean alot but Sander sold his house then stayed a further 18 months or so.
But that was because he did expect to be leaving, but was happy to stay.

Thing with Hamer and his situation is there unless there is financial pressure somewhere we don't need to sell him. Has to be for the right price.

Of course he could also down tools to push it through but my feeling is he isn't that sort. Mind you agents are funny peeps.

I've heard this too from someone who lives close to him and has spoken to him.

Same person above has suggested that Hamer expects to be leaving United but apparently reassured them - "Don't worry, it won't be to Leeds"

Going to HSV Hamburg or Strasbourg. 14.8 million euros.
If that’s accurate it’s a poor bit of business especially given his contract situation
I’d be accepting of flogging him for some form of (decent >£2m?) profit given his (financial) value is only likely to diminish as he (& his contract) ages.

I don't mind him going, he owes us nothing. Its great that he's moving abroad too but that's 2 or 3mil too short. £16-18m for the Championship player of the season surely.

Given that we bought him for a reported £15million (not sure if any add ons due to Cov) but has to be the minimum. I would even argue a min of £20mill mainly due to him being a first team regular player and we aren't under any pressure to sell. It's time we played hardball on some of these clubs that think they can pick up cheap in the Championship. Yes maybe in a case that you need to sell to balance the books but this season we are ok.
