It all depends on what his contract release clause. And when you have just won championship player of the season-the release clause is probably too low compared to when the contract was agreed. Once the release clause is triggered, he can talk to teams, so that will be met by a few- the club need to get best price possible, whilst not leaving it to the last minute where we can’t replace him or invest those funds. We do that all too often.

Great. We should absolutely go for top dollar for him. We are not desperate for the money, nor do we want to sell him. I personally think that he will stay another season as he seems happy-and we are a top side.

It was literally reported everywhere last summer amidst the Leeds interest.

Yes exactly.

Selling him at a loss is such an absolute wild take it’s unbelievable.

If current reports are true the club don’t really want to sell and he’s not minded to force a move but would like to play in the prem again.

So it’s either pay a decent fee or he stays

We paid £15 million for him when we were an EPL club. He's now 27 and clearly not likely to improve much. He's not got the athleticism to establish himself as an EPL player at a decent team. I'd say anything between £15-20 million is a fair price for him.

A few things to consider:

Championship player of the season
Not in his final year of contract
Has he actually said he wants to go?
I’ve been told he’s happy here.

On the above basis, if he’s sold it should definitely be for more than we bought him for imo. It’s the way transfer fees are and are heading

What did we pay? Was it £15m?

No way should he be going for less or even a similar fee

I agree 20 million would be good but athleticism is the reason he’s not already a premier league player. Athleticism marks out those in the top league from the rest. Unfortunately however hard he trains he either has it or doesn’t, Hamer has quality on the ball but without athleticism in the top league it looks like you’re lazy as the game moves too quickly. Relegation team as that’s the signings they make because they make because they are relatively cheap

He's surprisingly athletic for his build but if he actually took it seriously and didn't drink and eat unhealthily then he'd have a chance in the top flight, I think.

I suspect he will leave. BUT he has 2 years left on his deal. So a club would need to meet our valuation. If he had 1 year left then it's a different matter, we seem to go for the cash in option if they won't agree a new deal.

At a minimum that valuation is £20m a very bare minimum £18m with add ons. Realistically for me he is £25m, perhaps including add ons that are realistic that they would come to pass.

I am not sure even if he ate perfectly he would have the physical attributes to be a top level player. Some people no matter what they do can have that ability
 
Watching his training videos in the OFF season (wearing his united training gear) he does seem to take his fitness very seriously.

Wilder did say on many occasions that we had some players that were carrying injuries and niggles.

He seemed to manage 90mins earlier in the season, could he have been carrying a slight injury?

Yes it was called “outonthepisstilllateitis”. Something that was noted by a few commentators in and around Sheffield City Centre. He is Dutch after all. It seems Wilder indulged him quite considerably.

I know there's loads of talk in this thread about his inability to last 90 minutes but, in the games he started, he finished the season with:

Coventry 90 mins
Oxford 90 mins
Millwall 90 mins
Plymouth 90 mins
Cardiff 85 mins
Burnley 90 mins
Blackburn 60 mins (and I assume that was a pre-planned substitution with the play-offs coming up)

And then in the play-off semis, he played 85 minutes in the 1st leg and 72 in the 2nd leg (before being subbed when 5-0 up).

Only 3 of our outfield players played more minutes than he did across the season.

Yeah because if you actually want success then you want your players putting away 2 bottles of wine the night before the game or getting shitfaced on shots with fans during the season.

You clearly think it's the 80s but you can take home £1 million a year having a nice time.

Do you know that athletes can't fully recover if they have alcohol in their system,?

It's 2025, our fans want our players to be allowed to go out drinking and then also expect our team to be established in the Premier League.

Professional athletes should not be drinking during the time they're 'competing. Full stop.

Or should we pay players more per week than many earn in a year and yet allow them to take the piss?
