Had a chat with Tony Currie on Saturday

Ditto Highfield and he was a knob as well as being a pig!
One of the Wragg family members was at our school too. We used to ask for free tickets all the time but none were forthcoming. Anyone know if they're still involved in the running of SUFC?

On the subject of TC and the Birmingham game, I posted this ages back on another thread but never got a response:

"As for the match itself, the only thing I can remember is TC missing that sitter near the end. It's funny how people recall these things differently. Len Badger, in Currie's biography by Elliott Huntley, says this: "He went round three people and side-footed the ball past the post." My recollection is completely different. In my mind's eye, the ball drops at his feet possibly after there's been a challenge on their keeper. He's about six yards out and nobody near him but he scoops it over the bar. Anybody else care to give their version?"

Anyone?
I was at boarding school that night desperate to find out the score and wasnt able to until the next morning. I remember my dad writing a letter about TC's sitter and he (TC) was angry with himself

It's strange how you remember these things. I was 8 at the time and went to bed before the scores and I recall my Wednesday supporting friend telling me the score the following morning when he came round before school.

I was in tears before breakfast and the other pupils were asking my close mates why I was in tears. It would have been worse if we had won and then lose our spot in the UEFA Cup when Everton won their appeal

We had drawn 2-2 with Everton back in October after being 2-0 up. Had we won that, we would have finished 4th and been in the UEFA Cup anyways....

As a student reporter on Darts (Sheff Uni newspaper) I interviewed TC in 1973, a few days after the infamous England game with Poland that got us knocked out of the World Cup (in which he not only played, but started the move that led to Poland's goal by losing possession, something I didn't mention).

I was in complete awe of him of course but got him to sign a big colour photo of himself (which I still have). That was the start of a 40-year career in journalism for me and the only time I've ever asked for an autograph from someone I interviewed. Apart from Henry Cooper.

To be fair the move that resulted from TC losing possession should have been easily dealt with by Norman Hunter hammering the ball into row Z as he came across to the right wing. Instead, he tried to be clever and turn back inside resulting in Lato dispossessing him and getting away.....

I blame Leeds.

Also Peter Shilton admitted he tried to scoop the shot rather than get his body behind it. He blamed himself for the goal in his autobiography

Where was Paul Madeley (the right back)? Surely he should have been dealing with the ball up England's right. Told you it was Leeds' fault. At 3.06.

I don't even need to watch the clip to know it was Leeds' fault. Everything was in the 70s.

I think it's quite poignant that our greatest post-war achievement was, essentially, failure.

Looked at like that it has all been failure in our lifetimes (unless you are over 90, or unless you count winning the 4th Division title). Being in the Premiership now and narrowly missing out on Europe would do me :-)

I'd prefer a cup tbh
