Sheffield United’s first game under new boss David Weir is a trip to familiar surroundings for those who took in Neil Warnock’s 2006/2007 Pre-Season tour of Scotland, kicking off at Cappielow Park on 3rd July 2013 at 19:30.

Home of Greenock Morton, Cappielow Park is a traditional ground with the character to match, though on our last visit was beginning to show it’s age.

Originally named Morton Football Club, the Ton are one of the oldest clubs in Scotland, founded in 1874. The club were then renamed in 1994 to celebrate and identify with their home town of Greenock. The early years were also the most successful for the club, winning the Scottish Cup in 1922 and achieving their highest league finish in the 1916-1917 season – finishing runners up to champions Celtic....

His Lordship should be just about in Scotland by now.

Keep an eye on Twitter/Facebook for his updates (or you know, keep an eye on Twitter where certain people will be C&Ping his updates ;))

Weir's first line up:

Howard
Westlake Maguire Hill Williams
McGinn McDonald Doyle McFadzean
Ironside Cresswell

McGinn is a central midfielder who should not be played out of position [in real games - not bothered about tonight] to accommodate Mrs. Doyle .

I'm delighted to hear that our new manager is properly attired in smart suit and tie, unlike ragamuffins such as Warnock, Semi-Pro and Morgan. I hope he adopts a dignified, arms-folded, posture on the touchline.

McGinn has been central throughout the first half. We are pretty fluid though. McDonald spent as lot of time just behind Ironside.

Did Cressy play wide then?

Is it now:

Willis
Saunders Collins Higginbotham McGinty
Murphy Whitehouse Kayara Grainger
Porter Brandy
??

It's total football - infinitely interchangeable.

I knew DW would be good but to get there so soon........

:)

Thanks very much to Foxy for coverage.

I hope Brandy's injury is nothing serious.

Any sign of Sam Cox who is said to be having a trial?

Brandy coming off was precautionary, his hamstring was tight so they took him off to play it safe.

Didn't see Cox.

Actually, it seems you did! He played against us as one of 8 'un-named' trialists for Morton, I suspect that was by arrangement between the clubs. I'll be surprised if he doesn't turn out for us in the remaining fixtures. From what I've seen (not much, I accept) he'll be a significant improvement on Mrs Doyle. He will, he will, he will.

Bodes well, didn't even notice him :)

The trialists didn't look fit and have mostly gone I think, I'd be very, very surprised if any of them signed other than Kayara (who looks like he's got something to offer, but fades out of play at times - based purely on both friendlies so far).

I was very surprised to see so many. Weir when interviewed on Radio Sheffield the other week was asked whether he'd be getting any in, and he said he didn't think it was useful to have lots of new faces come in and out every other week - next week, several come in.

What type of midfielder is Kayara out of interest, based on what you've seen of him so far?

He's one of those who seems to have got a good touch, the odd trick and a little bit of swagger about him... but so far has drifted out for periods of play.

Threaded a few balls that no-one expected (in a good way) and has a bit of pace about him, seems to prefer the wings but not adverse to cutting inside.

Just like Robson did eh?:(
