Every time Mark Duffy has a dump, a little Jack Grealish comes out.

Never got the hype with this lad, completely overrated. I will be more worried about Abraham and McGinn to be honest.
 
Shithouse on the highest level. Watching him get tackled 3 times in 30 seconds at the Lane, moan to the ref who then told him to get on with it was a joy to behold. Good solid tackles n all.

I’m nervous for this game I won’t lie.

Don't believe the cheating tw@ts, I bet he's in the team. You don't have to be fit to lay on the ground and act!

When I did my coaching badges I was amazed to find that tackling was not taught as one of the key skills:eek:

most centre halfs cant tackle these days either. Always seems to be about intercepting. May be wrong but whenever I see tackling stats in a game it seems to be a centre mid with the highest & it's usually only 5 or 6.

Tackling is a dying art.

When i was doing mine in 2000(i think), defending was coached, but not tackling. Given that the rules of tackling were changing it was odd that there wasn't really a focus on it

I suppose it comes down to Midfielders seeing the most of the ball. Centre Halves should be reading the game firstly, coaching is (was) all about showing the attackers away from being a threat (onto their wrong foot or inside/ outside), it's about standing the opposition up. But when they have to make the tackle, it has to be good and that's what i love, there's nothing finer.

I used to love playing fullback against pacey wingers (when i had some pace), especially early in the game or when they'd come off the bench - show them outside, let them go down the wing, then put that glorious tackle in that takes the man and ball, cleanly, but sends them into the air and the ball heads out of play for a throw in. You know right there and then if they're up for the challenge or now.
 
The trouble with tackling nowadays is that when two players are trying to win the ball in a 50:50 situation, whoever is fractionally later into the tackle is deemed to have fouled the player that wins the ball. Particularly as the player who is deemed to have been fouled usually rolls around and cries.

........and yes, me too. I tended to always leave my foot slightly high as well, just in case it was a little mistimed - in other words: it was take the ball and player OR you ain't going any further.

As a (formerly) very nippy left winger, there was nothing I loved more than pushing the ball down the line, vaulting over the despairing defender’s outstretched legs and seeing him slide into touch as I looked up to see what was on next. :cool:

We clearly never faced each other. As Fulwood Blade says, leave the foot just so they can't go no further.

In this day of snowflakes, where every footballer nowadays (except Roy Keane) is afraid to to admit that they put tackles in to hurt players (not necessarily injure, but go in hard enough to put them in pain), i put tackles in which were intended to hurt the opposition and make them think twice about coming near me.... i also had a few more put on me as well! There were certain players that i faced that i just relished. Others i shat myself when i faced, but tried to never show it.

I must have been 36 or 37 when Tesco Bishopsgate (Liverpool Street Station, London) formed a football team, with our first fixture against Tesco Mile End. Our coach, an ex-pro called Sala from one of the Asian Leagues (can't remember which) put me at right-back where I was up against a teenager half my age on the left wing. This kid was tricky - fast, skillful, and slippery - and yet not once did he get past me. Not once did I win the ball either. I clattered the poor lad time after time, not because I was playing dirty, but because he was just too quick for me. Every time he'd slip the ball past me, a split second later my leg would go out, and another split second on he'd be in a heap on the floor. The amazing thing was that not once did the ref blow for a foul, leaving me to think that we must have bribed him with "unknown" shrinkage from the Wines & Spirits section. Sala hooked me at half-time.

I have the opposite experienced. As a young lad stepping up to the mens league at 15 and probably until i was about 19, i used to hate playing against what i considered the 'old blokes', fellas in their mid to late 30's or early 40's, one guy was in his 50's. They always wanted to use their 'experience' (see added weight, lack of fitness, agility, mobility and pace) to win the ball.

I'd played as a Centre half and Centre Mid in the U16's, but i was clearly too small and skinny when i moved up and they stuck me up front or on the wing, often as a sub. I was fairly pacey, but not rapid, so there were certain players that i could knock the ball past and run onto. These were the older blokes. Being right footed i often played down the right wing which was ok, i had a reasonable amount of joy. But it was playing left wing where i had the most fun. Being right footed against the right footed right back i wanted to come inside all the time, i didn't have to knock and run the ball down the line but would come inside and play the ball between the left back and left centre half time and time again to our right winger. It made me look half decent at times, but really i was just concentrating on the weaknesses of the opposition.
