When sung properly it has to be one of the great football anthems .

The rendition shown on the Mail Online video is truly awful and is yet another example of how things in the modern world almost inevitably get worse rather than better .

It is an iconic institution. It is more relevant than ever, as the game moves into business and money mode, the song stands as a pertinent reminder of where it once came from.

Football used to be a break from the drudgery of factory work, when a bloke could escape from the industrial world for a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon.

Next thing you know, the woke crowds will be pulling down statues of Wilberforce and Brunel!

There was a national newspaper article several years ago about the song highlighting the irony of a John Denver song maybe written in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and being sung by football fans in a Northern industrial inner city.

They clearly missed the intentional nature of the contrasting lyrics of the imagery of rural scenes against the contradictory rendition with industrial working class equivalents.
I often reflect on this dichotomy while singing it, especially the missing ooh ooh bit at the end.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen videos of much better renditions of this great football anthem than the one shown on Mail Online ,which is pathetic compared to those I heard when it was first introduced .
