I left this until after the Wednesday night games so that I could include the full league table going into the weekend. I’ve now just watched Rotherham deservedly shithouse themselves to defeat at Burnley, in time added on top of the 10 minutes added time! Rodriguez went off injured and Brownhill got a fifth yellow, though, so some good news ahead of Saturday.
So, a few graphs and charts and thoughts after the Bristol game.
Graph 1 compares this season to the Slav & Hecky results from last season. On 32 points we are 12 points clear of last season. Matchday 19 was Slav’s last game – so after the Burnley match Hecky will have done a full 46 games. At present he has 84 points from 45 games – probably a 3rd place performance – maybe squeeze 2nd.
Graph 1

Graph 2 emphasizes our improvements this year – and also shows the Hecky bounce that we experienced last year from Game 20 onwards.
Graph 2

Graph 3 compares this season to my benchmark sets of results which would achieve the playoffs and automatic promotion. You can see from this that we are midway between Certain Playoffs (6 points above) and Certain Automatic Promotion (6 points below). This is probably consistent with our current 3rd place in the table.
Graph 3

Graph 4 compares this season to our last 2 Championship promotions – Warnock 05/06 and Wilder 18/19. We finished second in both of those seasons, with 90 points in 05/06 and 89 in 18/19. You can see from Graph 4 that we are 1 point ahead of Wilder 18/19 but 12 points behind Warnock 05/06 after 18 games. So, if we can have a second half of the season like Wilder in 18/19, or indeed like Hecky last year, we should still be OK for automatic promotion.
Graph 4

Finally the current League Table with our results so far. This puts a lie to the idea that we are a team that relies on our home performances. As we approach the half way point in the season we are averaging 1.7 points away and 1.875 at home, with Burnley at home to come next. The table does suggest, though, that we have played better teams at home than away so far – and so the home/away points ratio may well go up in the second half of the season.
League Table Tonight

Obviously the 3 points at Ashton Gate were hard-earned, and not without a little good fortune – thank you for a crossbar, a post and an offside goal! But – as somebody once said – “Luck Comes Covered in Sweat”! I thought that we were stronger down the left when Enda came on, but generally we were pitifully overpowered in midfield. Doyle already leaves a big hole when he’s not there – at present McAtee is a luxury player, and just not physically ready for men’s football unless he’s protected by being beside/in front of somebody like Fernandinho or Fabinho.
Anyway - Onwards and Upwards.
