Well that’s why we need ask the question and know where we stand asap in my opinion.
Both are probably open to see what we offer. I don’t believe the story Berge will flat out refuse to negotiate and is set on running his contract down. Just doesn’t seem the type to totally screw us over. I’m sure the story originated from Alan Nixon and I’m absolutely positive Berge does not discuss his contract with that whopper.
Nevertheless, let them both know what our offer is, then see what they want to do.
Say Hecky’s Berge replacement is valued at 15m. We supposedly got offered near 20 for him in Jan. To me it would be smart to then offer him round at 10m, pay the 5 for his replacement and build. Not let him walk for free next summer and have to pay the full 15 out.
Same with N’Diaye.
I’d love them both to stay but I’d also prefer something rather than nothing. If they’re going to go, move them on and pick up the next players who’ll be here for a few seasons not just ticking down a contract.
I’m not daft and know I’ve pulled figures out my arse and football is more complicated than that but surely they can have adult conversations and get everyone’s cards on the table.
It's a sad fact that the obscene £ involved and the huge gap in wealth between PL clubs means that poor relations like us are put in the position of losing our top players before the end of their contracts.
Let's assume that Ndiaye & Berge won't sign new contracts this summer (in their position , I certainly wouldn't).
And let's say we could get £30m for the pair of them , whereas we'd get nothing next year.
We are not a club that can afford to write off that amount.
I totally agree with you that we'd be better selling and finding replacements on longer contracts , coz we are gonna have to find replacements in 12 months anyway.
But I would be gutted to lose them.
One player I wouldn't be gutted to lose is McBurnie , if only someone would offer a few bob for him (we'd have to be careful not to describe him as a footballer so as to avoid legal problems).
As for the "cheerio there's the door" list , there are some heroes of mine who sadly I don't think can contribute next season :
Billy
Bash
Robinson
Enda
Osborn
Fleck
JoC
Davis
Then there are some who need loaning out coz they aren't ready for PL :
Brewster
Jebbo
Osula
Lowe
Bogle (unless we play him in mf)
Arblaster
Brooks
So that leaves a very thin squad :
Wes
Baldock
Anel
Egan
RND
Coulibaly
Norwood
just 7 players
So it becomes crucial to buy
Doyle
and borrow
McAtee
Leaving us the task of finding 16 players to make the 25.
Maybe only 15 if no one will buy McBurnie.
Hope the scouts have been working abroad !
