Good or bad day?

Really odd game that. Even at 0-0 and against 11 men you could sense we were headed toward giving them a pasting. Then the 2 sendings off killed the game as a contest and again, you could sense we were going to put in a hatful. Then a few injuries put the skids on our shape and we seemed a bit too desperate to push for the goals wheb wed maybe have been better drawing them out of their 18 yard box. Still, We kept probing and in fairness they defended really very well and whenever we did get through their keeper pulled out a blinder or a rogue defender got in the way.

Onwards.

We were shit in the second half. Rickbert is bang on. Shows how influential Coutts and Duffy are,and also how solid Freeman is.
Crap finishing and I don't give a fuck what anyone says,we should have got another 5 against 9 men. Goal difference is potentially crucial and funnily enough that's all that's got us into second place.
Could easily have got caught again and had that happened no-one would be happy.

Coutts and Duffy going off = creativity, flair, intelligence going off. That second half was a result of those things leaving the pitch. Need quality against that kind of defending. Credit to Shrewsbury though them 9 left on the pitch did their team proud second half. Credit to the Shrews fans aswel.

Yep, that's the simple view. But we were always going to win that game as soon as we scored the first goal, certainly the second. The manner of the win was disappointing, it was a missed chance to score a lot of goals, and the injuries we picked up could hinder us more long term than the victory will benefit us.
I was disappointed that we dropped the pace and became sloppy in the second half. Kept running down blind alleys into the corners. They just double teamed the corners to stop us getting round the back and we didn't have the skill to drive into the middle. As for Billy and his penalty, when three old guys all say , 'Its down the middle and saved", you know its time he varies the routine.

Still, its nice to be able to grumble again for once and it might knock some complacency out of them.
Second half their defender with the wild afro type hair heded clear about 10 times and the keeper made countless saves.
What annoyed me was the side to side passing to no likely purpose the running to the byeline and overhitting the cross, the abysmal finishing.
Other than that it was great.

Not really. For the 45 minutes they had 9 men playing for them, they won 1-0. We got increasingly frantic & looked increasingly poor. We lost three key players to injury, God knows for how long.

The second half really wasn't good.

Even so (goes without saying really), I'm obviously delighted we won even if it should have been a lot easier, & I'm chuffed we're up in an automatic place - absolutely deservedly given we've kept the run going.

So to sum up, you're "delighted" and "chuffed" but it felt like a defeat. :)

How we didn't score 6 or 7 is a mystery. It was just one of those games for me and Sharp putting the penalty straight in his usual spot starting the ball rolling for us on that front.

I don't think the injuries are too serious. I imagine and hope they were taken off as a precautionary measure, considering the amount of games we have coming up.

It's a good day, we are 13 unbeaten and up to 2nd.

However I hope I never see eel on the wing again

Of course it was a good day, but for bad fortune we would have buried them. The 2nd half was target practice.

It's really not a problem. The game will fade from memory as the season progresses.

Although one special mention for Stefan Scougall. The most instrumental player we've had all season barring Top Scorer Billy Sharp.

Aye, delighted/chuffed about the bigger picture, pissed off about the game itself.

We were shit 2nd half, despite all the huffing & puffing (Basham, Scougs, Done & Lafferty the main culprits).

Hopefully no Bash in midfield on Tuesday (he'd be fine at right back though, as no doubt Freeman will be out). And hopefully Leon in for the ever more hapless Matty Done.

Was hoping we would score 5, but I will take 2-1 and 3 points every day of the week if it gets us promoted.

The lads walked off looking a bit dejected but no need for that, we won, we moved into second, we have a game in hand and forward momentum into Tuesday night.

We also have a strong bench for League 1, including a proven striker in Leon Clarke.

Let's not get despondent lads, it is 3 points gained and Radio Sheff said that news from SUFC is that none of the injuries are bad and all three players will be back soon.

Although the second half was poor, I'm not reading anything into it beyond today because 11 v 9 simply isn't a proper game. Then on top of that there were the three enforced changes. It's not like we needed to prove anything today. It's funny that after all the good wins we've had recently it was the shittest one we'll have all season that took us into the top two.

One positive is that in terms of mentality it sets us up better for the Bury game. It should prevent complacency and the players will want to put right that second half performance. I feel we would've been more vulnerable on Tuesday if we cruised to a 4-0 win.

Agree with the nay sayers, 2-1 noproblem with done that before and worse in the 'good run'. 3 potential first team injuries, no that makes it a bad day at work.

I'm sorry to add to the woes but when Fleck came into the lounge to accept the MOM he was walking like Herr Flick. To get three of our creative players nobbled in a game I think means that it was a bad win.
Having said that we all know how awful Wimbledon are and they strolled past Bury, so the fixture Gods may be in our favour.

More frustrating that good or bad.
Yes the game was spoiled with them having 2 sent off, but losing the second half 1-0 to 9 men shows just how poorly we managed a great opportunity to claw some GD back over Scunny

You mean your favourite player all season apart from Billy Sharp?

I'm glad you picked up on this because this could well be the difference and winning something even though it may be as humble as the third tier title means something to me. I've only ever seen us win the 4th division and many of our supporters won't have seen that.

Today was all about the result and that's what matters. Points make prizes

The dampener is of course the bloody injuries and just shows how quickly things can go tits up

I'm hoping Coutts will make Tuesday and that Duffy and Freeman are back shortly after

Anyone hear what Duffys injury is?

not 2-1 stats

30 attempts at goal
When was the last time we had 30 attempts at goal

the only stat that mattered was the W on our form guide

Of those ten on target, two went in (8), one was a saved penalty (7) five were unbelievable saves (2), one of which was a double save (1) and the other was inexplicably bundled out in a way the defender couldn't manage to do if he had a hundred goes at it. We left the pitch at half time with two in-form players having been injured enough to have been subbed by the kick off of the second half. In the second half, we attacked relentlessly against nine men for something like half an hour, during which we lost a third key player. We had endless attempts on goal against a team who didn't so much do a Mourhinho as a Trump. Their manic attempts to keep the score down by blocking every attack meant the ball rarely entered our half the whole time. Frustrating though it was, it was a typical 11 v 9 scenario. Pup Jnr turned to me and said 'they've given up, we're happy to just keep the ball, the fans thought it would be 6-0 so they're quiet, looks like its just going to play out like this' just Ebanks-Landell took his eye off the ball and let the other Ebanks beat him to it. We all know what happened next. Never looked like happening a minute earlier and to be honest, at least it made the last fifteen minutes look like a league match instead of a pre-season friendly. As long as we don't miss out on promotion at the end of the season by one goal, I think we can chalk today up as three points frustratingly gained.

I'm feeling really, really pissed off after that.

The fucking idiot Deadman ruined the game for a start. Playing against 9 men is always farcical and invites complacency and sloppiness. You're put in a no win situation straight away when the opponents are reduced to 9 or 10 because anything less than a resounding win is disappointing.

We've got three injuries to important players, and we couldn't even score a goal against 9 men - we couldn't even avoid losing the half. Not sure which of those things fucks me off more.

It should and would have been a routine win against 11 men, yet we end up narrowly beating 9 men and paying quite a heavy price. Perfect opportunity for a clean 4+ goal victory but it was just a total mess.

It almost feels like a defeat. At best it's one of the shittest wins we'll ever see.
narrowly beating??.. it was the most one sided 2-1 i've ever seen
happy with 3 points it could have been another oldham.. 11vs 9 can throw up some weird results.. forget it.. move on
